Baltimore saves early
victory from Angels
The Michigan Daily-Friday, October 5, 1979-Page 11
BALTIMORE (AP)-Don Stanhouse
struggled and Earl Weaver squirmed,
-but the Baltimore Orioles narrowly
surived a late-inning California Angels
rally to win the second game of the
American League Championship Series
by a 9-8 score yesterday.
After falling behind 9-1 in the first
three innings as Eddie Murray. drove in
four Baltimore runs with a single and a
three-run homer, the Angels rallied for
seven runs in the final four innings.
Stanhouse, Baltimore's ace reliever
who usually saves victories the hard
way, allowed two runs in the ninth
before getting Brian Downing to ground
into a force play with the bases loaded
to give Baltimore a 2-0 lead in the best-
of-five playoff series.
"There was never' a doubt in my
mind," Stanhouse said. "We won it,
that's all that matters. That's my forte,
to be out there while you're all ner-
vous."'
Asked if he were surprised that
manager Weaver had left him in the
game, Stanhouse cracked: "No, I was
kind of surprised Earl was still
around."
Weaver has confessed many times
that he hides in the runway when
Stanhouse gets into trouble by trying to
pitch too fine. But he didn't take that
tack yesterday.
"The runway didn't work," Weaver
said.. "Everytime I did it, they got
an ther man on base, so I just stayed up
and suffered."
. The Angels had only five hits through
the first seven innings before cha'sing
Baltimore starter Mike Flanagan out of
the game during a -three-run eighth.
Stanhouse was on the mound when four
of the last five runs were scored.
"My club has fought back all year,"
'said California Manager Jim Fregosi.
"We've battled back from a lot of ad-
versity. I think we'll win three in a row
in California." -
Weaver elected to walk Don Baylor,
who &rove in 139 runs to lead the major
leagues during the regular season, to
get at Downing in the ninth. The
Baltimore manager said that-Downing
was less likely to hit a homer and "I
thought he was having some trouble
with his thumb, both hitting and cat-
ching."
Fregosi later confirmed that
Downing caught a ball in his thumb and
was having a bit of a problem.
Flanagan and Stanhouse combined
for a 10-hitter, sending the Orioles to the
West Coast for Game Three tonight
with their commanding advantage.
