So says a banner being carried over Michigan Stadium by Woodstock (of Peanuts fame) on the cover of the 1979 Slippery Rock press guide. That statement may be valid since football fans cheer wildly when Slippery Rock scores are announced at stadiums across the country. The question at hand is: are they No. 1 on the field as well? Believers and non-believers alike can find out for themselves when The Rock and the Shippensburg State Red Raiders invade Michigan Stadium this weekend for an unprecedented event-small college football in a major college setting. According to the Michigan athletic department, ap- proximately 60,000 spectators are ex- pected to be on hand when the two Pen- nsylvania Conference (Western Division) rivals square off in the 1 p.m. contest, which also features aBand Day lineup of 12,000 high school musicians, the Slippery Rock and Ship- pensburg bands and of course, the Michigan Marching Band. SLIPPERY ROCK rolls into Ann Ar- bor as the main attraction in another of Michigan athletic director Don Canham's brilliant, money-making schemes. The Rockets have become fan favorites across the nation strictly becaue of their unusual school name. Canham has capitalized on this fact and taken the opportunity to put the Division II school in the limelight of a vast arena. At the same time, Canham has reinstated Band Day to round out a day of fun and frolic in the Michigan bowl while the Wolverines are on the road at California. Slippery Rock officials are calling the game "the biggest thing that has ever happened" to their school. As would be expected, the players and coaches of both squads are excited and nervous about playing in a big time environ- players) are going to react," added Di Spirto. "They're probably going to be nervous and apprehensive. We just hope we can settle 'em down as soon as possible." The Rockets, currently 1-1 on the season, are used to playing in front of crowds averaging 8,000 at home. The :':4;Y+i.l.^i ii?4'?..... .v'{?::: ;';g,.'ii i"'' ".v. So the adjustment "The whole campus is excited. There process won't be easy. But Di Spirto are all kinds of people going out there believes the importance of the game (Ann Arbor). will take precedent over the strange "IT'S HARD TQ know how they (the surroundings. "The game is important for a couple of reasons," said Di Spirto. "First of all, it's our league opener. Secondly, going to the 'arena' is exciting." MORE IMPORTANT than both of those reasons is the pressure Slippery' Rock is under to prove they have a decent football team to go along with their famous name. The average fan outside Pennsylvania knows little or nothing about the Rocket football team. But the Rock has a lot to be proud of. Slippery Rock won the Pennsylvania" Conference title for three consecutive years, 1972-74. After an off year in 1975; the Rockets roared back to finish in a tie for first in 1976. In 1978, The Rock wound up in second place in the Western Division behind co-champions. Shippensburg State and Clarion State. Among Slippery Rock's victims in, last year's 6-3 season was Shippensburg State (2-1 this year). The Rock topped the Red Raiders 22-15 on a 60-yard: bomb with just six seconds left to cap off a thrilling game on the Rockets home field. Di Spirto is convinced the' two teams must produce a game equal, to our more exciting than last year's contest to prove that small college foot- ball is for real. "SLIPPERY ROCK exemplifiet what small college football is all' about," said Pi Spirto. "Small college. football can be just as exciting as major, college football if in the proper setting. We're trying very hard to prepare our team to prove that fact. Hopefully, major colleges will expand one Canham's idea and give small colleges, an opportunity to be exposed to media coverage. "If we do the job, it will open the door for other small colleges," predicted Di Spirito. Several activities are planned to help promote this weekend's game. There- will be two pep- rallies today, one at noon at Hart Plaza in Detroit and the other at 7:15 at Ferry Field. CKLW's Dick Purtan and Tom Ryan' are the featured speakers at the Detroit gathering, while the world famous Budweiser Clydesdale Horses will be on display at Ferry Field tonight and out- side the stadium before the game tomorrow.
