Knick- knacks, humorous items, little remem- brances of history, are laced all over the walls. In one corner there is an old headline reading: "Decadence, depravity can be fun." And not too far from that is a photograph of a stern looking man. Beneath the eight by ten is the caption, "If you'd look for a job, you'd find one!" All right, so the Daily isn't the New York Times. But it is a newspaper published six days a week (five days a week in the spring and summner) by students that want to produce a respon- sible paper while also gaining an in- valuable education. Most students busy themselves in the Student Publications Building because they like it. The atmosphere is usually loose and informal, although there ten- ds to be less socializing as deadlines approach. Many are also there for the valuable experience they may obtain in journalism, business, or photography. MONEY RARELY lures staff writers, since most reporting and editorial personnel earn only enough to pay for their junk food fixes each weekend. Reporters for the Daily cover a variety of issues for the student- oriented audience. All news events and matters affecting students and other readers on campus are food for hungry reporters, many of whom have "beats" reiating to the University, such as Regents, or Administration. The other major sector of local coverage includes stories relating to Ann Arbor and all its citizens. City beats include City Council and tran- sportation. LOCAL SPORTS and arts events are also covered, and the newspaper also features a daily editorial page. The Daily attempts to provide a com- plete news spectrum and carries Associated Press and United Press In- ternational, stories for national and worldwide events. New writers for the Daily are assigned editorial duties-such as writing headlines and photo cap- ce, fun tions-as well as conventional repor- ting assignments. An annual crew of editors is elected by the entire news staff; sports and arts departments staf- fers select their own editors. Several financial aspects of the Daily make it one of the more unique student newspapers in the country. It is finan-,4 cially independent of the University, meaning the Daily relies on circulation and ad revenue to support everyday operation. AS A RESULT, the Daily business staffers receive quite an education working here. As is the case with most news staffers, the people who work on business for the Daily highly value the experience they gain. R x .. xercha r~e 4 I . ortho onali .
