But the Buckeyes completely dominated the second half. Minnesota's Paul Rogind booted a 44- yard field goal with just six seconds left in the half to make it 17-7. and raced untouched into the end zone for the winning touchdown. His pass to tight end Bill Jaco then gave the Buckeyes a four-point cushion. Michigan St. 41, Oregon 17 EAST LANSING - Tailback Derek Hughes rani for three touchdowns yesterday, one of them a 100-yard kickoff return, as 10th-ranked Michigan State swamped Oregon 41-17 in a non- conference college football game. Tailback Steve Smith ran for a fourth TD and placekicker Morten Andersen booted two field goals against the scrappy Ducks. HUGHES' electrifying third-quarter kickoff return, which broke a 33-year Michigan State kickoff return record, following penetrations to their nine and four-yard lines. Indiana 44, Vanderbilt 13 BLOOMINGTON - Quarterback Tim Clifford ran for two touchdowns and passed to Steve Corso for another yesterday as Indiana routed Vanderbilt 44-13 in a non-conference college foot- ball game. The Hoosiers also scored twice following pass interceptions, including one on a 70-yard return by cornerback Tim Wilbur. A 27-yard touchdown pass to Corso, son of Indiana Coach Lee Cor- so, also-was set up by Wilbur's fumble recovery at the Vanderbilt 22 late in the third quarter. THE HOOSIERS, winning their second straight game of the season, Big Ten Roundup broke the game open after the Ducks had narrowed the score to 20-17 on an eight-yard run by tailback Dwight Robertson. THE BADGERS clinched the victory after stopping Air Force on downs built a 23-7 halftime lead on touchdown runs by Clifford and tailback Lonnie Johnson, plus a 31-yard field goal by Steve Straub. Wilbur's long intercep- tion return, a sideline-to-sideline scramble, and, the touchdown pass to Corso made it 37-7 after three periods. Vanderbilt, losing its season opener, scored its only touchdown of the first half on a two-yard run by quarterback Van Heflin early in the second quarter. Then, with six seconds left in the game, Marcus Williams capped an 80-yard drive by scoring on a one-yard run against the Indiana reserves. Oklahoma 21, Iowa 6 NORMAN - Kelly Phelps briefly ad- ded some muscle to a disjointed Oklahoma offense as the No. 3-ranked Sooners took a 21-6 football win over the Iowa Hawkeyes here yesterday. Iowa started the scoring in the first quarter when quarterback Phil Suess hit a short pass to Mosley in the end zone. Then the Hawkeyes protected that lead until only four minutes remained before the half. Sooner starting quarterback J. C. Watts was shaken up briefly and was replaced by Phelps, who started a Sooner scoring drive witha pass to tight end Forrest Valora for a 27-yard gain. Three plays later, Phelps kept the ball and raced 18 yards to set up an easy one-yard scoring dive by 1979 Heisman Trophy winner Billy Sims. The Sooners finally awakened in the fourth quarter, scoring on a one-yard run by Watts. Then Sims put it away with a three-yard jaunt. MOSLEY PROVIDED much of the Iowa offensive char'ge, picking 74 yards by halftime, compared with Sims' 36- yard performance: Shaw kept things going for the Hawkeyes defensively by blocking a Sooner punt and knocking the ball loose from Sims to give Iowa another possession. The Sooners lost momentum on two other long drives when kicker John Hoge missed field goal attempts of 47 and 34 yards. Northwestern 27, Wyoming 22 EVANSTON - Freshman fullback Keith Dennis scored twice on one-yard runs as Northwestern, capitalizing on Wyoming's mistakes, snapped an 11-. game college football losing streak with a 27-22 victory yesterday. Wyoming lost three fumbles, quarter- back Phil Davis had two passes inter- cepted and the Cowboys were hit by a critical pass interference penalty. Missouri 14, Illinois 6 CHAMPAIGN - Gerry Ellis, a 220- pound power runner, blasted for touch- down runs of 19 and 24 yards, and gained 170 yards in 22 carries yesterday to lead 11th-ranked Missouri to a hard- earned 14-6 victory over Illinois. The Tigers scored first in the third quarter. Ellis rambled across from the 19-yard line and Jeff Brockhaus kicked the point. ILLINOIS CAME right back with a 79-yard touchdown march in 12 plays with Holmes going over from the three- yard line. But Kirk Bostrom's attem- pted conversion was hooked wide to the left. Missouri wasted no time in getting that touchdown back on an 80-yard march with Ellis taking a pitch from quarterback Phil Bradley and ripping around left end for 24 yards and the clinching touchdown. Forgotten' linksters are fifth in tourney NORMAL, Ill. - On a typical football weekend, most other Michigan athletics are put on the back burner. When a team like Notre Dame comes to town, everything else virtually disap- pears from the minds of Michigan spor- ti fans. Even golf, hardly a big spectator sport in the college ranks, must contend with the fact that any news made will be relegated to the lower echelons of the sports page. However, women's golf still carries on with fortitude and vigor resplendent of Michigan tradition. Tom Simon's crew currently must battle all these odds - as well as a few other golf teams - in the Illinois State Invitation tournament held inNormal, Illinois. . Wolverines round out the top five with a cumulative 337 score, well within striking distance offirst place. Four Wolverines broke 90 for the day. Elaine Crosby blazed the way with an 81. Linda Drillock, Robin Sabota and Alison Smith also conquered the course at 83, 86and 87,;respectively. The second and final round will be played today, and ABC-TV announced it will not show the competition on either regional or national network. -Daily Sports SCORES Purdue at UCLA, late USC42, Oregon State 5 Wake Forest 22, Georgia 21 Maryland 19, Clemson 10 Penn State 45, Rutgers 10 Syracuse 24, W.
