Jr. By DAN PERRIN As far as Professor George Cavender was concerned, he had no choice but to move on. It was merely a matter of courtesy. His long term goals and obligations had been fulfilled and now it was time to let someone else take over. With the above in mind, thus did Cavender step down last January from the post he had held for some 27 yeas, that of first assistant, then head con- ductor of the world-renowned Michigan Marching Band. The reputation of the band has risen to great heights since the long-time assistant to the equally famous William D. Revelli took over as head honcho in 1971. Time and again the energetic Cavender put together first class shows acclaimed as some of the best in the nation. Millions of fans have enjoyed his bands' performances at Michigan Stadium, various high schools and of course, at several bowl games. BUT NOW THE Cavender era has come to a close. And not a moment too soon according to the man himself, who offered a variety of reasons why he chose to accept a new job as Professor of Music and Director of Development and School (of Music) Relations. "27 years is a long time in any position," observed Cavender. "In essence, I had done it all. I have per- formed in the Rose Bowl, Super Bowl and Orange Bowl, in all the major' stadiums in the country. "From that standpoint, I'd be repeating myself," continued the famed disciplinarian. "A couple of times it's fun. But over and over, it loses it's challenge." CAVENDER also cited such frustrating problems as budgetary cut- backs, "which have already begun to affect the university community" as well as his dislike of an NCAA restric-. tion which limits the number of ban- dsmen allowed to march at bowl games to 196. The problem lies in the fact that approximately 250 hard-working students comprise the Michigan band, which would leave more than 50 distraught musicians in disarray. In recent years, Cavender's solution to this difficult situation has consisted of personally raising large sums of money from kind donors. These donations were used to send the over- flow of bandsmen out to the bowls along with the regulation 196 person block.' But, with increasing monetary cut- backs, the problem may become in- creasingly difficult in the near future. The new man in charge of upholding the Michigan band's high standards of excellence is Glenn richter, a 30-year- old graduate of the University of Texas' and, for the past two years, the head. conductor at the University of Cincin- nati. WHEN RICHTER was chosen as Cavender's successor, many people were surprised a man with no Michigan background had been given the job. Yet, Richter doesn't feel his un- familiarity with the surroundings will hinder his work. "I'm not at all uncomfortable with big time football," said Richter. "Going to Texas helped me. I enjoyed it; it was. a real asset." But that doesn't mean he's free of concerns for the upcoming year. After all, it's only natural to feel pressure in a new situation. "I have the same concern that every band director has every year. I hope and pray I have enough GOOD tubas, GOOD drummers and so on. "I KEEP HAVING this recurring nightmare," laughed the thin, red- haired Texan. "I'm out on the field and I get up on the ladder. I'm ready to con- duct the show and suddenly I realize I haven't taught a show. "But seriously, there's a lot of pressure," continued Richter. "The nature of the job is difficult. People take a lot of pride in the band and the university. "MY FIRST concern is making this season enjoyable and successful for the students," explained the clean shaven, conservatively-dressed music man. "I want to keep up the marching band's reputation. And I'd like to possibly add things to what they're doing." What kind of changes are in store for the 1980 edition of the Wolverine band? "Well, I doubt anything I would do hasn't been done before," noted Richter. "George (Cavender) has covered so much. "We might corps style n the band," people woul swirls in dr flag section expanding t and doing ma "And I'm percussion s be until 1981 will like thin WHILE I things with I der will be sp at home in 28 '"'I'll still be Band Day ( ProfessorsI Robert) Rey podium." ex Cavender.
