The Michigan Daily-Saturday, September 8, 1979-Page 9: MSU genius still missing t v EAST LANSING (UPI) - Police eking a missing teenage computer hiz hoped to finish searching a maze f steam tunnels beneath the Michigan. ta'te University (MSU) campus esterday, but admitted they still have zw clues in the case. Capt. Ferman Badgley outlined four ossible theories on the disappearance f James Dallas Egbert III, a 16-year- Id MSU sophomore. HE COULD BE alive and "playing a ;ame with us," Badgley said, could ave committed suicide, suffered foul play as a result of his homosexual ties r involvement in a fantasy game or died accidentally - possibly in the tun- nels. 4 "I think all of these are possibilities," Badgley said. "But I'm not hanging my hat on any one of them." Badgley also said state police believe a purported suicide note found in Egbert's room could have been written by the computer science student. Earlier, investigators said they believed the note was a hoax. HE ALSO SAID Egbert's mother believed the youth had been "somewhat upset and distraught" recently. He ad- ded, however, that others did not share this view. Badgley described Egbert as "ex- tremely intelligent .., brilliant" and said he is "capable of pulling off a hoax - there isn't any doubt about it." I He also raised the possibility Egbert has "gotten to the point where he's scared to come out." "We really haven't got any clues we can hang our hat on," he said. Badgley said differences between campus police and' private in- vestigators hired by Egbert's parents have been resolved. Police were upset by published reports urging informants to call the investigators, he said. "PsunIni t Need a ride out of towny?
