Gleiberman s 10 best (Continued from Page 7) at the dark side of the Ameria Dream. A languid feeling of loss hang over this prophetic elegy for a srfid mining village consumed by corport capitalism-a sense that downtrodde John McCabe's soul is slowly bein drained away, and ours with it.'Haile for its beautifully hazy photograph and innovative sound, McCabe remain much bigger and grander-m'e quietly magical-than the sum of its parts: An American classic. Aguirre, Wrath of God (Werner Her- zog, 1972) Apocalypse Now goes to Heaven, in Herzog's mystical meditation about a conquistidor snaking his way through the Peruvian Heart of Darkness in search of the idst kingdom of El Dorado. As Aguirre, Klaus Kinski comes on with the brash demonic appeal of a Teutonic Mick Jagger. Herzog doesn't just put you in the South American jungles; he takes you out of this world. Badlands (Terrance Malick, 19u) Not as splendidly ornate as Days of Heaven, but bigger and wider; like the Bruce Springsteen song that borrowed its title, this movie summons up the vast scope and epic 'grandeur ..of America itself. Set in the fifties and based on the Charles Starkweater killing spree, Badlands maywell bete coldest, most resolutely cynical move ever made by an American, as its two vacant outlaw/heroes lumber through the stark South Dakota flatlands h'e wax figures of Bonnie and Clyde. But Malick is a bravura story-teller, arid he's fashioned an eloquently desolafe myth out of this one. Potter s 10 best (Continued from Page 6) Marlon Brando, who embraces a part written largely with him in mind and molds it into the most beguilingly idiosyncratic performance of all time.r Apocalypse Now (Francis Ford Cop- pola, 1979) Similarly, a film smothered and distorted by so much pre-releaie hype that the finished product was bound to be an anti-climax were it to prove anything less than the greatest film ever. The fact that Apocalypse comes damn close to just that plateau did nothing to disuade its journalistic detractors, whose very personalized venom infested even the small handful of favorable reviews the picture received. I can only advise suffering fellow admirers of this transcender film to be patient: Apocalypse wi surely survive the test of time - deed, it may eventually come to be the standard by which all future films are measured. Which would hardly be the worst way to culminate this most paradoxical yet ironically most satisfying of film decades.
