;e 2-Wednesday, December 12, 1979r-The Michigan Daily Good News ANNOUNCING EXTENDED D Niah tHours FOR THE DIPLOMA TIC AT HEART College U.N. to convene here by DAVID MEYER Sometime toward the end of April, an estimated 450 delegates and top- level international representatives will converge upon the University campus for a rare midwest meeting. of the United Nations. Secretary-Generak Kurth Waldheim and his colleagues won't be in atten- dance, however, since all the delegates will be college students participating in the first large-scale college Model United Nations to be held on the University campus. Between 50 and 70 universities are expected to par- ticipate. ALTHOUGH UNIVERSITY organizations have sponsored high school model United Nations in the past, the event will be "the first college U.N. of its scale" in the midwest, ac- cording to student Sue Murrin, president of the Michigan International Service until 10:45 PM Monday =Friday Relations Society (MIRS), the group sponsoring the meeting. The University has, in the past, sent delegates to similar Model United Nations in Prin- ceton, New Jersey and New York. "We've been tossing the idea around since last January," Murrin said of sponsoring a local Model U.N. "It's a real learning experience. And half of the learning experience is in ad- ministeringit." Project sponsors expect some $11,000 in expenses to be incurred primarily through accommodations for delegates and securing adequate facilities for conducting the four-day assembly. The delegates will be housed in various University dormitories and the Michigan League. Project sponsors are investigating the possible use of lecture halls for the proceedings. Murrin expects to raise at lest one third of the necessary funds through the assessment of fees charged to each delegation. MIRS hopes to generate other revenue through grants and donations from corporations and University sources such as the Regents, the Michian Student Assembly, Academic Affairs Committee, and LSA- Student Government. MIRS is currently accepting ap- plications from anyone interested in participating in the Model United Nations. General delegate positions are open to all students and the more in- fluential positions on the Secretariat are open primarily to, students with some background in international relations or previous experience at a model United Nations. Interested students may contact Dave Morgan at the International Relations Society for applications. Ironically, he is in much the same position Smith was in assuming the presidency, since both had spent several years as the vice- president for academic affairs for the University. IT'S A GREAT help to have been academic vice-president," Smith said. The fundamental differences in the two positions is that the academic affairs vice-president deals mostly with inter- nal concerns and the president mostly with external affairs, Smith said. After he leaves his post next month, Smith says he will probably have litle involvment with the University's high- level administration. And what advice does the experien- ced president have to offer his future replacement? "It would have to do with attitude more than substance," the outgoing Smith said. "I really think that it's terribly important. . . to operate on a generally affirmative mean, attitude, idea. Despite the fact'that we're going to have to say no quite a lot. . . despite the fact that they're going to have to be saying that 'you are now out 'of business,' those things are going .to have to be done in an affirmative man- ner if they possibly can." - - ON CBS RECORDS and TAPES.
