Page 4-Tuesday, December 11, 1979-The Michigan Daily The Michigan Daily-Tuesday, D Kupec and famous Amos Strong-armed Kupec an outspoken leader Lawrence rushes to plethora of records RE RE 0 BO MKS By BILLY NEFF Matt Kupec could not play football for Bo Schembechler. The record setting North Carolina quarterback is too slow afoot, but more importantly, Kupec speaks his mind. Unlike Bo's quarterback duo, B.J. Dickey and John Wangler, Kupee lam- basted his coach Dick Crum numerous times. Dickey and Wangler would chime in together after football games how they both agreed that the two quar- terback system was the best for the team when many knew better. But Kupec is different. He criticized Crum when the second year mentor fir- st came to North Carolina for "Vince Lombardi quotes" to motivate the team. Then he sulked last year when he -was benched. THE COUP DE GRACE came after the Gator Bowl-clinching victory over Virginia. The senior from New York had been bitter about being benched early in that contest. Kupec uttered such things as "we are so stinking conservative," in reference to the play selection. He called the game "the low point of my career" and he also said, "I feel like I was spit in the face." Kupec eventually was asked to apologize and acquisced. When Kupec is not mouthing off, when he lets his arm do his talking, that's when he can be heard loud and clear. He set an Atlantic Coast Con- ference record last year by hurling 18 touchdown passes. He also completed 54% of his 227 attempts for 1587 yards, while only tossing nine interceptions. IN PREVIOUS seasons, Kupec has completed an average of 56% of his passes for over 2200 yards and 15 touch- downs. He has led the Tar Heels in passing three straight years, which only one other quarterback in North Carolina history has done. Two years ago, he led his team to the ACC championship and a spot in the Liberty Bowl, where he copped Most Valuable Player honors. In his fresh- man year, after sitting out his first season with a knee injury, he directed the Tar Heels to a Peach Bowl berth. The business administration major holds almost every North Carolina record. Despite his rather small 6-1, 194 lb. frame, he is hoping to parlay these statistics into being a professional football player. And a good game against Michigan would go a long way towards proving wrong any college scouts who, are skeptical about his size and ability. "I THINK I should be able to do anything I want on a football field," Kupec said in the Detroit Free Press: Except run, that is, because the im- mobile senior has rushed for a total of only 46 yards in his career, including a minus 23 yards this past season. Kupec hopes for a big game against Michigan because he says, "ever since I've been a little kid I've been looking up at Michigan." You can bet one thing, if North Carolina upsets Michigan, Kupec will have had a big say with his arm and not his legs. And then he'll let his mouth do the talking. By BILLY NEFF You're in pretty good company when only one other running back in college football history, Tony Dorsett, now starring for- the Dallas Cowboys, has accomplished the same feat. What both Dorsett and North Carolina tailback Amos Lawrence have in common is if Lawrence totals over 1,000 yards next season, Lawrence's senior year, they will be the only ones to reach this milestone four years run- ning. Speaking of running, Lawrence has done plenty of that his first three years in Chapel Hill. Rushing for 2,254 yards his first two seasons, his totals fell short of only two met in NCAA history-Dor- sett and Po James of New Mexico. This past season, "Famous Amos" rambled for 1,019 yards and a 4.1 average. Injured during the season, the Norfolk, Virginia, native came on strong near the end of the season to reach 1,000 once more. INJURIES ALSO set in last season, but Lawrence totalled 1,043 yards and a 4.5 average anyway.. His best camnpaign came as a fresh- man when the 5-10, 179 lb. speedster twisted and turned for 1,211 yards and a 6.3 average with six touchdowns. In- cluded amongst his honors after his initial year were the ACC rushing title, all-ACC honors, Football News Freshman All America, named on 124 of 125 ballots as ACC Rookie of the Year and the frosh recordholder for most yards in a single game against Virginia-286. All this happened in spite of the fact Lawrence only started six games his freshman year. Add all of these creden- tials up and an eighth place finish nationally in rushing that year and you have one heckuva talented runner. THEN, IF YOU consider that he once rushed for 411 yards and 5-touchdowns in a high school game, you know the potential is there. Skeptics would disagree since he has tailed off somewhat since his stellar freshman season, due to a tendency for injury. After gaining 131 yards against Virginia last season, Virginia head coach Dick Bestwick raved. "Amos Lawrence is the best running back I have ever seen. He's better than Dorsett, better than anyone. I watched the films and saw him do ,things with the football I've never seen anyone do." Enough said. Lawrence has all the tools and moves to shred Michigan's defense. Will he, though? Few people have been able to accomplish such a feat against a defense that features All- Americans Ron Simpkins and Curtis Greer. But if anyone is going to accomplish such a feat, it would be Lawrence. He has done the seemingly impossible before. And' it's purely fun being in the same company as people like Vagas Ferguson and Tony Dorsett. I,- .... the distinctive, pers4 selection that -apprei throughout the year.
