It is doubtful however, when the Michigan Wolverines and the North Carolina Tar Heel square off in the Gator Bowl that Michigan coach Bo Schembechler will be looking for verification of this old adage. When Schembechler was coaching at Miami (Ohio), North Carolina coach Dick Crum was the coach of the Mentor High School team in Mentor, Ohio and attending Bo's clinics at Oxford. Coach Crum admits that he developed a good deal of his football philosophy from reasons why Crum has strayed from the option oriented offense. THE OTHER TWO reasons the Tar Heels can afford to dump the option lie in the persons of tailback Amos Lawrence and fullback Doug Paschal. Lawrence broke the 1,000 yard barrier in the season finale against Duke, finishing with 1,019 yards in 225 carries for an average of 4.1 yards per carry. This year's performance marks the third season that the junior tailback has rushed for over 1,000 yards. Only Tony Dorsett has broken that barrier four times. The other half of North Carolina's productive backfield, the 6-2, 214 pound Wooten, named by The Football News as a second team All-American, is only a junior and a good pro prospect. In key situations, junior center Rick Don- nalley will team up with Wooten and Junkmann, and the Tar Heels will run left. And last, but surely not least, the Tar Heels have a place-kicker who can split the uprights. Sophomore Jeff Hayes kicked six of t' cluding two 47 yar be used from any It seems that strayed a bit fro prepared to teac lessons of his ov Lawrence may g ultimate tribute not. Washington Join The Daily Sport Wooten Crum ... Tar Heel streamroller ... pupil turned spoiler? Daily Photo by DAVID HARRIS Bo's clinics, particularly his offensive philosophy. Dive, trap, sweep, option left, option right. The Ohio-born ground game dogma drones on. IRONICALLY, THIS year finds both coaches straying from the good word of the midwestern football Bible. Schem- bechler has gone increasingly to the forward pass because one of his quar- terbacks seems to have glue on the soles of his shoes. Crum goes to the air because he has one of the best passers ever seen in the Atlantic Coast Con- ference. At 6-1, 194, Tar Heel quarterback Matt Kupec threw for 1,587 yards and an ACC record 18 touchdown passes this season. In completing 123 of his 227 at- tempts for a .541 percentage, Kupec's strong right arm accounted for 40% of North Carolina's total yardage. Like Michigan's John Wangler, Kupec's running ability is somewhere below respectable and most likely it won't be exhibited much at the Gator Bowl. In fact, the senior quarterback amassed (or back-pedaled) a total of 23 yards during the season. This is, as you might expect, one of the main Paschal, doubles as the Tar Heels' number two rusher and their number two pass receiver. The senior ball- carrier gained 835 yards in 177 carries for a 4.7 yard average, and caught 23 passes for 162 yards. Don't be surprised if Paschal uses the Gator Bowl to burst out of obscurity. WJILE PASCHAL keeps a low profile in the backfield, the Tar Heels' leading receiver doesn't even crack the starting lineup for most games. Junior tight end Mike Chatham has wrapped his eager digits around 27 passes for.a total of 429 yards, yet will probably not start against the Wolverines in Jacksonville. Apparently, the Tar Heel coaching staff feels that sophomore Shelton Robinson is a better blocker and necessary to get the running game un- tracked. Look for Chatham on passing downs and in the late going. If there is an easily discernible trend on the Tar Heel tendency charts it is probably their inclination to run left. The. reason for this penchant is no secret, as the left side of the offensive line is man- ned by 6-4, 254 guard Ron Wooten and 6-3, 234 tackle Steve Junkmann.
