Page 2-Tuesday, December 11, 1979-The Michigan Daily The Michigan Daily-Tuesday, Deis Put it up I M'stats (Continued from Page 22) I PatS S By MARK MIHANOVIC The Michigan gridiron wars have been won through the air as well as on the ground in this centennial football season. If the Wolverines are to win their final battle in the Gator Bowl December 28 against North Carolina, they may need this diversified attack. The Tar Heels (7-3-1), ranked second in the Atlantic Coast Conference in rushing defense over the season, but dead last in pass defense, suggests that the passing talents of John Wangler might prove more valuable for the Blue than the option abilities of B.J. Dickey or Rich Hewlett. The key to North Carolina's strong rushing defense is the inside linebacking tandem of Buddy Curry and Darrell Nicholson. Curry, a 6-3, 220- pound senior,, led the team in tackles for the third straight year with 119, and picked off five opposition passes to lead the squad in that category as well. His quickness and range perfectly com- plement the sophomore, Nicholson, who's the hardest hitter on the team. Nicholson, the ACC Rookie of the Year last season, was second-on the team this season in tackles with 101. DONNELL THOMPSON (6-5, 260) anchors the defensive line at left tackle. His five sacks tied him for tops on the 6D concerns Tar Heels' team, and he possesses excellent speed to go along with his size. The other two defensive lineman, John Brugos (6-2, 227) at right tackle and Bob Duncan (6-2, 211) at nose guard,. are on the smallish side, but' compensate for that with hard work and intelligence. The two outside linebackers, Lawrence Taylor (6-2, 230) and Calvin Daniels (6-3, 225) both possess great athletic ability and an improved pass defense, a mediocre quality early in the season. Taylor nabbed opposing passers five times for losses. RICKY BARDEN, a 5-9, 178-pound rock, is stationed at strong safety. Rated by many as the greatest defen- sive back in North Carolina history, the senior from Norfolk, Virginia, was named to second team All-America by the Football News this year. Barden only intercepted Nvo passes over the campaign, mainly due to the fact that opposing quarterbacks stay away from his area of the field. Yet he made an amazing twelve tackles behind the line of scrimmage, including four sacks on blitzes. It's a good bet that the Wolverines will avoid Barden's zone as much as possible. The rest of the secondary is con- sidered' questionable, even though free safety Steve Streater, who also handles the punting quite capably with a 41.2 yard average, pulled in five intercep- tions. North Carolina is most vulnerable 'at the corners. Opponents exploited the inexperience of freshman Larry Winters and junior David Singleton all season long, and Michigan coach Bo Schembechler will probably let speedsters Ralph Clayton and An- thony Carter loose. back there.
