In the end, however, it was forward Thad Garner who provided the impetus 611 CHURCH for the Wolverine comeback. Garner hit on five of seven second half shots for 19 points and grabbed 8 rebounds to lead Michigan in both departments. "It's the best ballgame Garner has ever played at Michigan," said coach Johnny Orr of his 6-7 sophomore, who played the entire 40 minutes. The Warriors, playing in front of a noisy sell-out crowd of 10,938, were leading 52-39 with seven minutes remaining. That's when Garner went to work, hitting for four of Michigan's next six buckets. The critical shot in the string was a lay-in Garner executed with 4:50 to play., In the process, Warrior guard Sam Worthen fouled the lanky forward as he drove down the lane. Garner's free throw completed the three-point play and gave the Wolverines a 56-54 lead they were never to relinquish. The Wolverines ran even with their opponents throughout the first 13 minutes, relying mostly on Mike McGee's outside shooting. Guard Mark Lozier was the first tobe overcome by the Warriors' tenacity, as he had a pass intercepted by forward Terrell Schlundt. Schlundt went in for an un- contested layup, and the Warriors proceeded to expand their lead. Marquette's deliberate attack worked wonders in the first half. Guar- ds Sam Worthen, Artie Green, and Michael Wilson operated a three-guard offense, which based its sucess on feeding Schlundt in the middle. Schlundt 03-60! responded by pouring in 14 points through the first 20 minutes. Maintaining the slim margin down the stretch wasn't easy. After Marty Bodnar had picked up an offensive foul guard Sam Worthen hit a short jumper inside, cutting the lead to two at 58-56. But McGee, who had spent a substan- tial amount of time on the bench with foul trouble, hit a key insurance bucket with 1:45 left. Taking a feed from Keith Smith, McGee drove in for a layup while crashing into Worthen. The foul was McGee's fifth, and he left with 17 points on the evening. Schlundt led the Warriors with 18 points. He received plenty of help from the Green-Wilson-Worthen trio, which combined for an additional 35 points.a Michigan's next basketball test oc- curs Wednesday night when the Wolverines face the University of Detroit Titans at Joe Louis Arena.
