I' Page 8-Sunday, December 3, 1978-The Michigan Daily TIDE TOPS AUBURN, 34-16; SUGAR BOWL NEXT: Alabama earns shot at Penn St. BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP)-Jeff Rutledge broke Joe Namath's school record for career touchdown passes, throwing two to Bruce Bolton and one to Rick Neal, as second-ranked Alabama defeated Auburn 34- 16 yesterday, to set up a Jan. 1 Sugar Bowl showdown with top-rated Penn State for college football's national championship. Rutledge also tied the Alabama single-game touch- down pass mark as well as the one-season record of 13 shared by Namath and Harry Gilmer in leading the Crimson Tide to its seventh Southeastern Conference title in eight years. The 6-foot-2 senior, playing before a record Legion Field crowd of 79,218 in his home town, connected with Bolton on scoring pases of 33 yards in the opening period and 17 yards with 32 seconds left in the first half. That toss erased a 13-10 Auburn lead and put Alabama on top for good 17-13. RUTLEDGE ADDED the 30th of his four-year career-Namath threw 28 in three seasons-with an 11-yarder to Neal early in the third quarter. Back-up quarterback Steadman Shealy scored Alabama's final touchdown on a 20-yard, fourth-down run in the final period while Alan McElroy booted field goals of 34 and 39 yards. Alabama wound up the regular season with a 10-1 record and an eight-game winning streak. The Tide's 6-0 SEC record earned them a trip to the Sugar Bowl as the host team against Penn State., GEORGIA, WHICH was held to a 22-22 tie by Auburn two weeks ago, finished second in the con- ference at 5-0-1 and will meet Stanford in the Bluebonnet Bowl. Auburn concluded with a 6-4-1 overall mark. Auburn, a 16-point underdog, gave Alabama all it could handle in the first half. Joe Cribbs, who rushed for 118 yards on 32 carries, scored the Tigers' touch- downs on runs of 5 yards in the first period and 9 yar- ds in the second quarter. Jorge Portela kicked a 37- yard field goal in the third period for Auburn's final points. The gambling Tigers, who used such gimmicks as a fake field goal and a fake punt, surrendered the lead when William Andrew fumbled at his own 20 and Alabama's Murray Legg recovered with one minute remaining in the first half. After two plays netted only 3 yards, Bolton got behind defenseive back Clif- ford Toney and Rutledge found him with his second scoring pass of the game. THAT BROKE NAMATH'S career record. Rutledge tied the mark midway through the opening period with a 33-yarder to Bolton, who got behind defensive back James McKinney. Auburn tied the score 7-7 with an 81-yard, 15-play drive that lasted six minutes. The key play as a 10- yard shovel pass on the fake field goal from holder Foster Christy to Andrews for a first down at the 15. McElroy's first field goal early in the second quar- ter put the Crimson Tide in front 10-7 but Auburn took its only lead with 2:46 left in the half when Cribbs' 9- yard run capped a 46-yard strike after Freddie Smith recovered a fumble by Alabama's Steve Whitman. RUTLEDGE, WHO completed 13 of 21 passes for 174 yards, teamed up with Neal on an 11-yard aerial to make the score 24-13 at 4:56. Portela's field goal narrowed the lead to eight poin- ts but Alabama salted the game away in the final quarter on McElroy's second field goal and a 67-yard march which belonged to Shealy. The junior quarter- back carried four times for 60 yards and scored on a fourth-and-two keeper around left end after Alabama called its field goal unit off the field.
