k 'GREATEST HONOR EVER '-LEACH: eam votes Leach Most Valuable By The Associated Press ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Rick Leach didn't win the Heisman Trophy yester- day, but his University of Michigan teammates offered consolation, selec- ting him by a wide margin as their Most Valuable Player for the 1978 season. IAt last night's annual football awards banquet, the senior quarterback and four-year starter from Flint said his teammates gave him "the greatest honor I have ever received." IT WAS THE first time the team had voted the award to Leach, a senior who broke national touchdown and scoring records this year. Michigan Coach Bo Schembechler said the team voted as the MVP "the best player not only on our team, but the one who could be the best player on kany team in the nation." "We have one more 'game to play," Leach said, referring to U-M's New Year's Day date with Southern Califor- nia in the Rose Bowl, "and in that game I hope to do my best 'and win the Rose Bowl for Michigan." MICHIGAN has lost bowl games three years in a row, once in the Orange and twice in the Rose. Leach finished third in the Heisman voting, behind Oklahoma running back Billy Sims and Penn State quarterback Chuck Fusina. Senior linebacker Jerry Meter and Tom Melita, a senior offensive lineman, were votedathe Wolverines' Hustler of the year and Champion of the Year, respectively. Michigan finished its season Satur- day with a 14-3 victory over arch-rival Ohio State, earning a share of their Big Ten title, and a third straight Rose ' Bowl trip. The 56-year-old Stager said, "I just would like to have more free time to do things like travel. I haven't made any definite plans, but I may try to in- crease my teaching load. If not, I would either go into private business or ac- cept temporary coaching of national swimming teams. "I wanted to announce my retirement plans early so adequate time is available to hire a replacement," he said. "We have a. lot of potential with our present team and I plan to devote all my energies to developing it." Stager suepeeded the legendary Matt Mann in 1954 and since then, his teams have compiled an impressive record of 157-38-1, with three Big Ten titles and four NCAA Championships. He served as head coach of the 1960 U.S. Olympic swimming team in Rome, was head coach of the men's Pan- American team in 1967 and was head coach of the men and women's swim- ming team for the first World Aquatic Championships in 1963. Stager has been an innovator in college swimming and helped develop rule changes that unproved competitive swimming. During his coaching tenure, the automatic timing device was initiated at Michigan. National champions who swam under Stager include Carl Robie, Juan Bello, Tony Tashnick, Carl Woolley, Dick Hanley, Jack Wardrop, Bumpy Jones and Ron Clark. Before coming to the University of Michigan, Stager had coached Dear- born Fordson High to three state titles. A native of Nutley, New Jersey, he was an All-American swimmer and leading scorer in 1948 at Michigan under Matt Mann. * * * * -Mark Mihanovic Slaton brewed MILWAUKEE-Pitcher Jim Slaton returned to the Milwaukee Brewers Tuesday, signing a multi-year contract with the American League baseball team. Slaton pitched for the Brewers from 1971 through 1977 before being traded to the Detroit Tigers for outfielder Ben Oglivie in December, 1977. The Brewers were among 13 teams, including Detroit, which drafted Slaton in the re-entry draft Nov. 3. Slaton leads the Brewers in games started with 206, completed games with 56, victories with 72, innings pitched with 1,449, strikeouts with 701 and shutouts with 16. He has a career record of 89 wins and 103 losses and a career earned run average of 3.89. He logged 17 victories, a career high, against 11 losses in 34 starts with Detroit in 1978 and had a 4.12 ERA. Terms of the contract and its duration were not disclosed. "Going into last season we had no winners when the season started," said Brewers Manager George Bamberger. "Now we have Jim Slaton who won 17 games, Mike Caldwell who won 22, Lary Sorensen who won 18 games, Jerry Augustine who won 13 and Bill Travers who won 12. Add to that Moose Hass, who was supposed to be our best pitcher and hardly pitched because of an injury, and I think we have some flexibility in our starters." Slaton is the fourth free agent signed by the Brewers in the past three years. The other three are third baseman Sal Bando, outfielder Larry Hisle and catcher Ray Fosse. -A* -AP Knicks knocked NEW YORK-Elvin Hayes scored 35 points to lead the Washington Bullets to their eighth consecutive National Basketball Association victory last night, a 133-106 rout of the New York Knicks. The eight-game winning streak is the Bullets' longest of the past decade and is just one game short of the team record. The loss was only New York's second in eight games since Red Holzman replaced Willis Reed as coach. Reserve forward Greg Ballard hit a pair of free throws and a jumper to start a 15-4 Washington burst that gave the Bullets a 60-31 halftime lead.
