ERRMANN TO TEST BLUE SECONDARY: Defense supplies Boiler' The Michigan Daily-Friday, November 17, ]978-Pqge 13 By PETE LEININGER With Purdue smelling roses for the t time in years, most of the talk is out sophomore passing sensation ark Herrmann and the potent Boiler fensive, but it's the defense that got em where they are. PURDUE HAS registered three utouts this season, giving up a scant 7 points per game. The Boilermakers ve only once allowed more than 16 ints in one game, that being 24 in last ek's contest with Wisconsin. Coach Jim Young, slightly worried "out the inexperience (only three .niors starting on defense) of his fense earlier, now considers the fense the best in years. "Keena Turner could be one of the st defensive ends in the league," con- nded Young. Turner has had 74 ckles this year, 21 of them accounting r minus 161 yards. JUNIOR linebacker Kevin Motts, ho leads the team in tackles with 114 nd already holds every Purdue ickling record, will head up the oilermaker defense. Joining Motts on defense is junior eman Ken Loushin who is second on e team with 79 tackles, 13 of them for total of 74 yards lost. Junior nebacker Mark Johanson, playing in is first full season, has impressed the caches and is tied with Loushin with 79 ckles. Despite giving up 24 points last week, oung felt the team played a good efensive game. "We made mistakes at 'Toronto dumps Bru ins BOSTON (AP) - Darryl Sittler fired third-period goal that climaxed a bree-goal Toronto comeback and a 6-4 aple Leafs victory last night over the oston Bruins in an NHL game. . It was only Toronto's second triumph n Boston Garden in 33 tries in the last 1 years. Pat Boutette and Bruce Boudreau set p each other for goals 14 seconds apart 'n the third period to bring the'Leafs in- o a 4-4 tie. The Toronto goals canre less than a iinute after the Bruins had taken a 4-2 ead on quick scores by rookie Al 'ecord and Rick Middleton. The third-period scoring explosion broke up a tight checking game bet- ween the rivals, who are now one point apart atop the NHL's Adams Division. Davy Williams gave Toronto a 1-0 lead at 1:45 in the first period, but Secord came back to tie it for Boston wjth his first goal of the night 45 secon- ds later. Wisconsin in the kicking game, and not just in the punting game." Six Purdue punts netted only 164 yards, an average of 273 yards per kick. IN ADDITION to the lack of distance proved club from last year, mainly because of their effective blend of run- ning and passing. Last year, Purdue rushed for only 1,426 yards, which had most teams keying on the Boilermaker passing attack. This year, Purdue has already run for 1,627 yards, led by sophomore John Macon with 781 and senior Russell Pope with 653. Both players are averaging 4.2 yards per carry. THE BOILERMAKER passing at- tack, led by Herrmann, is as sound as ever, and even more effective with the addition of a respectable running game. s punch bullets will be a corps of potential scorers. Flanker Mike Harris has caught four touchdown passes and 27 receptions for 379 yards. Split end Bart Burrell has caught 24 passes for 381 yards and three touchdowns. Senior Scott Sovereen, from Midland, Michigan, has a list of field goal recor- ds: most in a game, four; single season, 13; and career, 24. This year he has kicked 13 field goals and is 21 for 21 in extra-point conversions. 34LB$ 89 .A GREAT TASTING STEAK ATA,- PSICE THAT'S EASY TO SWALLOW Our price includes a juicy % lb. steak (pre-cooked weight) with all the trimmings. His aerial touchdown production (12) is slightly down from last year, but he has been intercepted only nine times fthus far, a drastic reduction from last year. Last week, Herrmann connected on 18 (six straight in the second half) of 29 attempts for 262 yards and two touch- downs, including a 75-yard bomb. Herrmann needs work on his running, though. This year he has rushed for -88 yards in 24 carries, for a -3.7 yard average per carry. PURDUE IS averaging 368 yards per game,-187 in the air and 181 on the ground. The Boilermakers are averaging 21.5 points a game, and their high for a gamne was 34 against Iowa. Both Macon and Pope are among the top ten rushers in the Big Ten. Macon has four 100-yard games so fa'r this season, while his last year's total was only 60 yards on 17 carries. Pope possesses breakaway speed, but is hindered by his lack of size. Pope is listed at 5-11 and 186, but is probably even smaller. DOING THE majority of the blocking and attempting to set Pope and Macon free will be a line led by 6-5, 235 pound right guard John Lefeber and 6-4, 228- pound left guard Dale Schwan. Pete Quinn, 6-2, 243, will be at center for the Boilermakers. "We're in a position Purdue hasn't been in for a long time. It will take a lot more mental preparation," said Quinn.
