The senior signal- caller hit on 26 of 42 attempts, good for 296 yards and two touchdowns. Smith threw no interceptions. Kirk Gibson, Smith's favorite target, made eight catches to establish himself as MSU's top receiver of all time. Gib- son now has 107 career receptions, sur- pasing the old mark of 102 set by Gene Washington. After the game,, a happy Smith gave all the credit to his receivers. "I think that as a group they're the best in the nation," said Smith of Gibson and sidekicks Eugene Bryd and Mark Brammer. "I can't say enough about them. Gibson can turn a five yard gain into a. 50 yard gain." Both of Smith's TD tosses on the day went to Byrd. While Smith was lauding his receivers, Spartan coach Darryl Rogers gave the credit to his defensive unit, which turned in several big plays and a blocked punt good for a safety. "Defense was the key to it," said Rogers. "We needed a strong defensive showing and the defense rose to the oc- casion. rophers "A defense has got to hit," continued Rogers. "We hit at the Michigan game we haven't-hit since. But we were 'hit- ting out there today." The Spartan defense hit enough to limit the Gophers to 198 yards of total offense. Minnesota scored on a second quarter field goal by Paul Rogind and a later fourth quarter touchjdown pass on a fourth down and 15 situation. Meanwhile, MSU moved up and down the field almost at will, but three fum- bles kept them from further running up the score. Two of the fumbles came.in- side the Gopher five yard line. In the game's most bizzare play, Smith handed off to tailback Steve Smith who fumbled the ball right into the arms of Gopher nose guard Jeff Carr at the Minnesota one. The 223 pound Carr lumbered down the sidelines for 71 yards before Gibson caught him with a flying tackle. Five plays later Rogind hit his field goal and it was 17-3 at halftime. In the second half Smith matched his first half output by engineering a pair of TD drives, and the defense added the safety. Indiana 34, Iowa 14 BLOOMINGTON - Quarterback Scott Arnett passed for two touchdowns and tailback Darrick Burnett and Mike Harkrader ran for one touchdown apiece yesterday as Indiana pounded Iowa 34-14 in a Big Ten college football game. The Hoosiers, aided by a pass inter- ception and fumble recovery, rushed to a 24-0 halftime lead. The Hawkeye of- fense, meanwhile, was unable to move until early in the third quarter when quarterback Jeff Green passed to Rod Morton for a four-yard touchdown. Indiana struck back three minutes later, after Lonnie Johnson returned the kickoff 58 yards. It took seven plays, all on the ground, except for a 15-yard pass from Arnett to Mike Friede, before Harkrader ran in from the six. Harkrader, a sophomore tailback, led all rushers with 129 yards, including 110 in the first half as the Hoosiers piled up 16 first downs to just three for Iowa. The victory evened Indiana's Big Ten record at 3-3 and raised its overall record to 4-3. Iowa fell to 1-5 in the con- ference and 1-8 for all games.
