The Michigan Daily-Sunday, November 12, 1978-Page 7 Detroit is pushed as convention site in '80 (Continued from Page 1) voice in the party's national decisions-such as convention site selection. Milliken has already shown an urge to use his clout in Washington when he led the delegation of gover- nment, political, business, and labor leaders who testified before the site selection committee. While the Republicans have Milliken pushing their cause, state Democrats are relying on Detroit Mayor Coleman Young to pull down their party's meeting site for the city he oversees. Young is the vice-chairman of the national Democratic party. Despite Detroit's good points, it has a problem because the area is short of hotel rooms. Officials in both parties say they would have to look to Ann Ar- bor, Windsor, Ontario,_ and other outlying areas for the 20,000 rooms needed to lodge convention-goers. THOUGH NO PARTY has decided where its convention will take place, the Republicans are further along on T plans for their 1980 spectacle. BERG In addition to Detroit, Minneapolis .St. Paul, Miami Beach, Kansas City, New Orleans, and Dallas have made bids for the GOP convention. The site committee-composed of seven party members-is in the process of inspec- ting the six citites and will visit Detroit later this month. The panel will make a not final recommendation to the January, tat I 1979, Republican National Committee por- meeting. The Democrats aren't planning to 's a name a site committee until next mon- tten th. According to Democratic National een. Committee Communications Director , Susan Morrison, the party has received bids from Miami Beach and New Orleans-neither of which are in ERA- ratified states. BUT, MORRISION said, unlike the GOP, the Democrats will consider cities that haven't officially made a bid with the, party. And, using ERA ratification and hotel space as major criteria, convention spots will probably be limited to Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, or New York City, she said. Peter Schoch, the Uhivesity's direc- tor of housing information, said the Housing Office has already agreed to provide some 2,400 dormitory rooms-primarily for use by younger convention-goers-if the Republicans come to Detroit. Schoch said Bursley and Baits would likely be the facilities offered by the University because of ample North Campus parking. Schoch said arrangements have been made with the GOP and the Ann Arbor Conference and Visitors Bureau to reserve 85 per cent of the city's first- class hotel room for the convention. JOSEPHINE GOOD, the Republican National Committee's convention director, said she wouldn't estimate the chances of her party coming to Detroit in 1980, but said practical, rather than political, factors will be considered most important. The same is true of the Democrats. "Our major criteria are space and facilities," said Morrison. She added that Detroit has "several political ad- vantages" such as the ERA ratificction and Mayor Young's presence in the city. Paul Moordaian, an offical with the state's Democratic Central Committee, though he doesn't know if his party will officially make a bid for a Detroit con- vention would be good for the state. "OBVIOUSLY, IT would increase revenues coming in the state," Mooradian said. "I suspect there are a lot of people who have a negative idea of Detroit," he added, but holding the convention there "might help out." Milliken, in a statement before his party's site committee, said a Detroit convention would prove that neither his party nor the city is dead. Morrison said there's nothing to stor the Democrats and Republicans from choosing Detroit as a convention city, since there was a precedent in 1972 when both parties brought their delegates to Miami Beach. "The networks would love it," she said, explaining that one city would make the job of setting up and movi.g equipmnt much simpler. The whole idea crosses my way of thinking. I can't live with a situation like that." One member of the band said many band members feel stress between Cavender and Reynolds was a factor behind the resignation. "You kind of get the feeling that Cavender and Reynolds don't get along that well," the band member said. "Those who have been. around for a long time sense some animosity between the two. When they have the chance to dig at each other, they will." A strained relationship between Canham and Cavender was also men- tioned by band members, but Ca vender disputed these claims. "Since Canham has been athletic director, cooperation has increased between the band and the athletic department," Cavender said. "There has been no friction.'' ONE BAND member said, "He's really happy with Canham from whI hear, but I don't think that's an im tant reason for his resigning." But, another added, "Cavender team player. At the midwestern conference, these factional disputes almost prevented the adoption of several resolutions, in- cluding the one forming a regional committee. But Kate Rubin, a member of the Washtenaw County Coalition Against Apartheid who attended the conferen- ce, said she doubts any internal disagreement will block consensus on the principles of unity. "I'm confident we'll be able to work things out and come to terms on certain goals and tactics," Rubin said. This morning, the committee- will assign to various delegates tasks aimed at achieving the group's many objec- tives. These jobs include publishing newsletters announcing regional programs, selecting representatives to attend next weekend's North East Con- ference in New York, and assigning delegates to plan activities for the National Week of Actions Against the South Africa regime on March 18-24 of next year.
