y Why lie?
yMichigan takes on Northwestern today at Evanston
yand there are no two ways around it-the Wildcats
don't have a prayer to win.
y Even o Schembechler refrained from his usual
buildup of an opponent because there just wasn't
anything to promote. Sure Northwestern throws the
ball, only Michigan State ranks higher in passing
statistics, but that is only because the Wildcats are
horrendous on the ground.
Junior Kevin Strasser is one of six Wildcats that
have heaved the ball around (forward and on
purpose). Strasser is strictly a drop back
quarterback as noted by his rushing record: 47
attempts, 232 yards LOST.
But when he is on, Strasser and the Wildcats can
potentially be troublesome. Northwestern scored 20
points on Ohio State (yet lost by 43) and NU averages
167 yards through the air. Predictably, the Cats have
been intercepted 11 times, one short of Iowa's league
leading amount.
Although the NU passing attack can move the ball,
the running game can't. Frankly it's pathetic. In
seven conference games the Wildcats have gained 463
yards, an average of 66.1 yards per game.
By comparison, Michigan's ;Harlan Huckleby has
accumulated 532 yards to lead the Wolverines, and he
has only played in six of Michigan's eight games
overall.
If there is any validity to statistics, then the
Wolverines cannot help but do well at Dyche
Stadium. Primarily a running team, Michigan

usually totals 270 yards rushing. However,
Northwestern gives up 307 yards per game on the
ground.{
Further, the Wildcats can boast the conference's
best passing' defense, limiting opponents to 83 yards
each Saturday afternoon. Michigan is second in that
category at 107.6.
But there are always more than numbers involved
when two teams battle it out, and again the
Wolverines figure to come out on top.

because of knee problems. Hill's injury severed~
limits the already restricted NU offense agains
Michigan.
Also out are kicker Nick Mirkopulos and eigh
people on defense ranging from semi-regulars ,Jin
Miller (linebacker) and Mile Weitzman (defentsiv
tackle) to those like defensive tackle Norman Well,
whose contribution to the season has been tw
tackles-one solo.
"They've been hit with a rash of injuries," said-Bo
"which is costly, even if you have a good team going
in." But Bo isn't one to accept victory witho~
earning it, and the Wildcats must have some pride ?o
why else would they keep on plugging away ga~m
after game?
"The one thing about a Northwestern team i
they'll play you to the hilt, they'll play you hard .an
th y w ntqi.T e a a ei og fehfor you and I'm sure that's what they're going to-try
to do to us," Bo said trying to sound convincing.
Another intangible which separates Michigan,
from Northwestern is tradition. The Wolverines ha v
obviously had their share of success down thr6ugl'1
the years while the Cats have won only 38 per cent o~
the games they've played.
"Really, the tradition of the school is probably the
most difficult thing to overcome," Schembechle
said.
One other thing will be working to Northwestern'
disadvantage. Since NU wouldn't move the game to
Ann Arbor this year, athletic director Don" Canham
went out and promoted the game to Michigan fan~
and alumni both here and around Chicago.
As a result, the Wildcats are expecting a season
high crowd of 28,000 (capacity is 48,000) and more
than half to be rooting for the Mazie and Blue.

For instance, there is the injury factor. While the
Wolverines are mending and healing, the Wildcats
are collapsing at the seams.
Roosevelt Smith and Huckleby are sufficiently
)recovered from their injuries and it shouldn't hamper
them. Bo says Huckleby will play but will not start.
As for the Wildcats, the situation is just the reverse.
