The Michigan Daily-Friday, November 10, 1978-Pagel1 THE SPORTING VIEWS Basketball lottery.. . a bunch of gibberish BY GARY KICINSKI "DEOPLE ARE idiots." A blood-curdling scream went out from someone sitting in Section 22. "nlight here!" he yelled, jumping out of his seat and rushing down the steps to the table on the court. The student, loosely defined as a gentleman, a senior, and bearded, was rejoicing over the fact that his number had finally been called - after patiently waiting for two hours. Now he could rush back up the stairs, dash to the end of the line, and wait a couple more hours in the Crisler Arena concourse to choose his 1978-79 basketball tickets. "Number 437 . .." said the megaphone-man. "Is Number 437 here?" Pause. Then, from the back: "I got one real close! Can I take it?" The crowd was .erratic. At times boisterous, at times passive, at time's frivolic - most of the time bored and frustrated, The doors had opened at 7 p.m. By 7:40 only 20 numbers had been called. By 9:00 only 100 blocks had received their tickets. Another 180 block representatives stood in the dimly- lit concourse. Another 170 or so sat scattered in the south end of the arena, waiting for their number to come up. "I kinda took itsfor granted," laughed Peter Meyer, whose block number, 288, was the first plucked out of the drum, and whose three-member block was granted first seating choice. "I wasn't looking forward to spending three hours waiting in line," said his block-mate, Randy Ransom, glancing eagerly at his Section 33 (midcourt), Row 4 seats. The line in the lobby wrapped around to the darkened southeastern corner. One student kept his place in line while sitting on a folding chair, a case of Miller Lite in his lap. Out by midnight? Booooooooooo ! spin the damn drum!" The air near the rear of the arena was at times high-ly pungent. Beer cans were more prevalent than history texts, and Pizza Bob's made its predicted appearance. Some people chose to leave after finding out their position in line, planning to return in an hour or so. "I'm a senior, I've been to every basketball and football game, and now I'm 304th in line, and it sucks." Courtesy of Calvin Clark.. Responding at last to calls to spin the drum, the emcee gave it a tug - and promptly turned the thing on its side, spilling out half of the coupons. "Hey - that was my number!" "It's gonna be time consuming," said ticket manager Al Renfrew. "We think everyone will be outta here by midnight." "It as the most beautiful thing I've ever seen!" exclaimed Scooter Simon, fourth to receive tickets. "It's like heaven, baby!" Simon, you see, was the one who had started a line for seniors way back when. His line and his number one position were invalidated by the ticket department. Justice was served. But served to how many? WI 08Announces IN CONCERT at the SECOND C/HlACE TUESDAY. NOVEMBER 14-9 PM SMAIA W RELA YS A T MA TT MANN POOL: Women tanke By DAVE ZEMAN The 1978-79 swimming season is right around the corner and Michigan girls' coach Stu Isaac expects big things from this year's squad. With only one swim- mer graduating from last year's ninth ranked team nationally there seems lit- tle reason to doubt him. "We didn't have as good a recruiting year as some of the other schools (but) our goal is to place seventh in the Nationals," said Isaac. A glance at the roster gives an in- dication as to why Michigan has dominated the Big Ten the last three years. The key to their success, as in any sport, is their remarkable depth. They will have 16 swimmers and divers returning who competed in last year's Nationals. LEADING THE TEAM will be Katy McCully, one of only three seniors on this year's team. Katy has collected nine individual titles over the last three years and is the most versatile freestyler on the team. Joining her in this event will be Kim Groleau and Kim Olson in the sprints, and Lisa Matheson and Lori Hughes in the distance events. Michigan will once again have the premier diving squad in the nation. Returning sophomore Julie Bachman captured both the one and three-meter events in last year's Nationals, beating three U.S. Olympians in the process. Along with transfer student Barb Wein- stein from Ohio State, coach Isaac feels he has "the best 1-2 punch in the coun- try." All-Americans Mary Rish and Sharon Flaherty and freshperson Barbara DonCarlos will give Michigan an im- posing trio of backstrokers. Rish has already rewritten the varsity record book in this event with outstanding times at the 50, 100, and 200 yard marks. Breaststroke was one of Michigan's weakest events last year but with the return of team captain Joyce Johnson and Big Ten champion Karen Rydland, better times are expected. Newcomer Marie Palko is also swimming well and may solve their problem in this event. ISAAC WILL NEED good times from all his swimmers if he is to extend his dual meet victory string (of 23) .through the up- rs open coming year. tignignting tne dual meet season will be away meets with Alabama, North Carolina, and North Carolina State. Michigan can expect its stiffest conference challenge from perennial -contenders Wisconsin and Indiana. Coach Isaac is also wary of facing Michigan State in their home pool. Even with this heavy dual meet com- season petition, the team should have no trouble in sweeping to an unprecedei- ted fourth straight conference swim- ming title. This year's Big Ten Cham- pionships will be hosted by Michigan at Matt Mann Pool. The Wolverines open their season tomorrow with the SMAIAW Relays.
