I am a forty-eight year old medical doctor who has been practicing
family medicine in Ann Arbor since 1 960. Ten years ago I left a well estab-
lished medical practice to found the Summit Medical Center, at which I pro-
vide high quality, low cost medical care for people with limited incomes.
During the 1960's I worked in the peace ,and civil rights movements,
and I was elected to the Ann Arbor City Council. In 1976 I bas the Demo-
cratic candidate for Congress from this district and lost by less than 300
votes. This was the closest race in the country.
Most people ask me why I want to practice politics instead of medicine.

these problems. Second, I really believe that government can still help
people. I think I have the qualities to work at making our state govern-
ment work.

pressing public health problems in our state. My work has taught me to oper-
aea heith care facility effiintly and eonomically. I will use
