By VICKI HENDERSON
Professor Eric Wolff, former Chair-
man of the University's Anthropology
Department, returned to Ann Arbor
Monday night and said that history is
the key to examining today's societies.
Wolff, who left the University in 1971,
stressed in a speech that societal pat-
terns can best be understood by looking
at earlier ages.
"WE LIVE IN an interconnected
world which is the product of the
overall process of developing capital
and people have been drawn into its
vprtex.
"Questions come out of rethinking
concepts held today and can help us
develop new insights," Wolff said.
Specifically, Wolff pointed to patterns
which began as early as the days of the
fur trade in which the French, English,
and Dutch became dependent on
Iroquois Indians for resources and later
used them in competition against each
other.
The professor also emphasized that
societies should be viewed as integral
parts of a whole rather, than separate.
fragments. He said the current social
sciences view of societies is one of a
"billiard table in which the billiard
balls are in contact with each other but
their characteristics don't interact."
Wolff also cited Karl Marx as having
a developed sense of history which'was
the basis of his theories. He added that
Marx was aware of the nature of the
state and used the notion of social labor
in his political-economic ideas.
EAST LANSING (UPI)- Michigan
State University student Sami Esmail
said yesterday he may sue the U.S.
government over the alleged role of the
FBI in his arrest by Israelis on
charges of belonging to a terrorist
group.
Esmail, who was released on parole
from an Israeli prison two weeks ago,
told reporters the FBI definitely
violated his rights in the case.
'This is not an attempt
to hide my sympathy and
support for the Palestinian
people.'
-Sami Esmail
THE FBI GAVE the Israelis infor-
mation about his activities in the United
States and may have tipped Israeli in-
telligence agents when he would be
arriving in their country, said the 23-
year-old graduate student who has par-
ticipated in campus activities suppor-
ting the Palestinian cause.
Esmail said he was "still studying"
the possibility of filing suit against the
government and has not yet come to a
decision.

ALICE IN THE CITIES
(Wim Wender) A warm, humanistic tale of a disenchanted German photog-
rapher and his travels through Europe with a worldly none-year-old girl. After
escaping from America's pop culture and rock-nroll, Philip returns to his
native Germany only to find that his home has become Americanized as
well. The result is a sensitive portrayal of human relationships, and the
omnipresent culture of modern society.

The Shoot Horses, Don't They
(Sidney Polack, 1969) Director Pollack, using Horace McCoy's novel puts Jane
Fonda and Michael Sarrazin on the dance floor to the goading of Gig Young,
the cynical promoter, and comes up with some of the Most memgrable screen
performances ever. "I was moved; then shaken by the beauty and genius of
Horace McCoy's metaphor. Two people circling endlessly around a dance
floor, the girl, tough and scared and vulnerable, spitting out 'Christ' as an
epitaph at every new evidence that god did not exist. In the stages of the
marathon with death hovering everywhere, the survivors make us rejoice for
all those 30's families that hung out together through the incredible squalor
of the period."--Andrew Sarris, VILLAGE VOICE.
