But there really is little to this
"progressive country" that doesn't
immediately catch one's attention.
"It's fun music. There's always a funny
story," says WRCN disc jockey Deb
Lev, who adds that she thinks
"Opreyland" country music is "sappy"
when compared with the likes of Willie
Nelson.
A MOTHER who has raised her son,
or daughter, so well as to prepare them
for the intellectual life in Ann Arbor
may be surprised when her offspring's
tastes devolve to this simplistic country
sound, but that simplicity seems to be
the key to the music's appeal.
Thomas says, "You don't really have
to think" to enjoy the pedal-steel and
sometimes discordant ballads of the
outlaw musicians. "I think a lot of
people can identify with that."

cash in on their current popularity.
"They duped the public with that
album," says Thomas. "Waylon and
Willie are laughing all the way to the
bank. It's a joke and they know it."
Indeed, Jennings has since released a
track entitled, "Don't you think this
outlaw thing has gone too far."
But in their own right, the performers
are still respected, and adored, by some
in Ann Arbor and many more in the
South. The Texas sound is definitely
challenging the more marketed types of
music in this town in a way traditional
Nashville country probably never will.
"Conway Twitt," says Thomas, "still
has no chance in Ann Arbor."
