The Pizzamen reached the finals with a 17-1 pasting of the Longballers in the first semifinal, while Canyon and The Good Times battled last week for the other slot. Canyon won, 6-4, in the six-inning darkness-shortened contest, with a last inning three-run rally. The Good Times later successfully protested the game however, with the end result being the replaying of the semifinal this week, followed by the championship. ONE PROBLEM though. Unsure that the protest would be successful, Canyon went ahead and played Pizza Bob's- Yellow Cab last Friday, winning 9-6 in what would have been the championship final. "'And they don't want to play us again," stated Canyon assistant coach Bill Smelko. "Most of the guys on the Pizza Bob-Yellow Cab have been playing all summer and figured that Friday's was their last game." Compounding the problem for Smelko and head coach Jeff Liebster is the fact that some members of the Canyon team (primarily law school students) had plane flights scheduled for job interviews this week. The two phantom finalists, Canyon and PB-YC, typify the smorgasbord of teams found this year in the independent divisions. PIZZA BOB-YELLOW CAB is largely a product of the new IM user pass policy, which enables "Significant others"to play softball with the sponsorship of a university affiliate. The Cabbies participated in the Ann Arbor sum- mer league, then used the fall IM season to gain some late- season practice. Canyon is a familiar name in IM success stories. Coached by Jeff Liebster, a two-time Earl Riskey Award winner as top IM athlete, it perenially ranks at the top of the overall IM standings (first last year). "They should be good, over the years they've recruited for various sports all over campus," said softball program assistant Jeff Smith. "Canyon goes after any good athlete it can get, residence hall, off-campus, whatever." In other independent division action, the Buddy Kidds edged the Tuff Mooners for the "B" championship, 11-8, while the El Paso Doperunners copped the "C" title with a win over Umgana Kick Butty. THE FRATERNITY "A" division produced a surprise champion in Sigma Phi, a house consisting of only 35 men. It wasn't a breeze however, as Sigma Phi had to squeeze by Sigma Alpha Epsilon in the semifinals 10-7, and then push across a run in the bottom of the seventh to nip Sigma Alpha Mu for the greek championship, 6-5. "I'm not surprised how well we did," said coach Ernie Sellers. "We practiced three times before the season star- ted and then twice during. We're a good defensive team with a lot of spray hitters." Like many IM teams, Sigma Phi enjoyed a carryover of talent from the summer, as Sellers and Jim Pollock, both key performers, played together over the summer in Ann Arbor. IN OTHER greek action, Sigma Nu became "B" champs with a thrilling 6-5 triumph over Phi Gamma Delta. To reach the finals Sigma Nu topped Theta Delta Chi in the semis, while Phi Gamma Delta nosed out Phi Delta Theta (fraternity overall IM champs last year), 8-5. The Residence Hall competition provided few surprises, as perennial powers Wenley House and Allen Rumsey of West Quad battled for the "A" crown, with Rumsey ending up on top. Intramural Director Dick Pitcher has noticed the recurrent success of certain dorms and ascribes it to tradition, not necessarily a lack of talent in other dorms. "These teams have learned the ins and outs of managing, mainly organization and getting people to play," said Pit- cher. "There's obviously no way to recruit outside the dorm." OTHER WINNERS in dorm competition were Frederick House in "B," with a victory over Kelsey House of South Quad and Oxford in "C" winners in the title tilt with Elliot House of Markley. And lastly, the Defective Quaddies nabbed the dorm "D" title, with a win over Fisher House along with two forfeits.
