winning The Subject Was Roses suc-
ceeds in making every member of the
audience feel they were back home
again. The play is a tender- low-key
drama about two parents whose war
veteran son returns home to surprise
them with his new-found adulthood. In
each crisis or struggle, there is an
ever-present feeling of the
claustraphobic, intimate love between
an only son and-his very loving parents.
It is in these tender moments that one
feels allied with the actors on stage.
Without ever feeling tied up in this
family, we are allowed the opportunity
o experience the feelings of having. to
)reak away from the people with whom
iniversal growing-up play. It never
3egs for a response, but merely presen-
s a series of simple events filled with
the tension and closeness that let us
examine and analyze the feelings of the
family members.

TIMMY CLEARY, played by Robert
Beaupre, is the 21-year-old veteran who
returns to his family's Bronx apar-
tment after three years of fighting
World War II. Timmy's father never
expected to see the always sickly boy
return from war, but along the way,
Timmy has grown into a strong and
confident man. His parents are con-
fused and bewildered by their new role
as parents of an adult.
Roberta Yule Owen, as the mother, is
luminous. She creates stirring insights

into this simple character, in the
smallest tasks the mother performs. It
is her tenderness and pettiness that
gives realism to the basic human
element in this play and makes it won-
derfully dramatic and touching.
Externally, The Subject Was Roses is
the simplest of plays. The makeshift
set's only advantage is the beautifully
authentic 1946 kitchen -- the rest of the
set is straight out of high-school
dramatics. Yet the basic emotion is
reiterated in this elegantly simple

Soundstage ofr
Musicalf mfor all
By GERARD PAPE
A new musical program featuring both School of Music performers and
non-music majors who wish to perform will begin this Tuesday, October 10,
at 8:00 p.m. The series, called Soundstage, will be held every other Tuesday
at the "U" club in the Michigan Union, and the first program will feature a
flute and folk guitar duo.
The purpose of Soundstage, according to co-chairman Jon Diamond, is to
generate overall interest in musical activity as well as produce amateur
acts. Diamond sees Soundstage, which is sponsored by the Union
Programming Committee, as a bridge between the latent musical talents of
Central Campus students and the more actively organized School of Music
on North Campus. Future shows promise a single night's diversity of folk,
jazz, ragtime, dixieland, and country, as well as special nights devoted to
particular styles of music.
If Soundstage is successful, Diamond feels, it should also offer an
interesting place for students to socialize at instead of bars. Diamond hopes
that by next semester the program may expand to a weekly event.

design. It is the strength that emanates
from this stage and plot that provides
interest. And the acting quality is proof
of this strength. Each character is in-
dividual enough to be a true focal
element in the play.
THE FATHER, Played by James
Presser, raises his voice more than
enough to show who's boss, and flashes
his Irish Catholic temper at the critical
moments of disappointment. But
though he thinks he understands his
son, he has much to learn about Tim-
my. Presser begins his performance a
little slowly and lumberingly, but war-
ms to the character by the fourth scene.
He makes us understand his plight bet-
ween the forgotten love of his wife and
the now ineffective stern dominance.
Robert Beaupre as Timmy ties
everything together with a stunning
performance. It is he who makes us feel
intimate with this tightly-bound family.
His mother burns the waffles his first
morning home, and Timmy is
bewildered by her tears. It is the per-
fect timing accorded this moment that
makes it the play's most poignant. This
family is bound by their mutual ex-
perience, and at the climax we see that
they begin to deal with it.
The University Museum of Art's
volunteer docents (tourguides) led 155
pre-arranged group tours, or more than
3,350 people-through the. museum in
1976-77.
