Coaching the Wildcats is Tony Mason, a man familiar with Michigan Stadium. Mason spent five years on Bump Elliott's staff in the mid-sixties, leaving when Bo Schembechler arrived, and then spent four years at Purdue. At Cincinnati in his first college head coaching stint, Mason compiled a 26-18 record, each year improving his win- ning percentage. He quit in 1976 to coach the Wildcats, who compiled a 5-7 record last year in Mason's first season. Arizona's entire athletic department has a decidedly Michigan flavor to it. Athletic director Dave Strack is a for- mer Wolverine basketball coach, while former Blue assistant Jim Young preceded Mason as head coach. The Arizona attack is headed by Jim Krohn, a junior quarterback who leads the Wildcats in total offense with 525 yards. In his first year as a starter, Krohn has responded by completing passes at a .667 clip while tossing for 439 yards and four touchdowns. Krohn's only an average runner, having gained *****<************ ** * PRESENTS MUGSY Tonight and Tomorrow 327 E. Michigan, Ypsilanti 482-7130 **C3 **** merely 2.7 yards per rush this year. But he is blessed with a set of large receivers with Ron Beyer, a 6-3, 217 pound tight end, Tim Haynes at split end, and Tim Holmes, a 205 pound freshman at flanker. While Beyer's 40 yard dash time of 5.0 seconds won't give Jolly, Harden and Co. nightmares, he enters the game as Arizona's top reciever with 12 catches, and two touchdowns in gaining 13.9 yards per snag. Earning his fourth let- ter this year, Beyer is being touted for All-American honors and remains the man Krohn relies on in the clutch. The ground attack is centered around a junior college transfer, junior Larry Heater. An All-American at Dixie Junior College, Heater supposedly runs a 4.3 40 yard dash. The Las Vegas native ran up impressive stats in J.C. football: 2,300 yards rushing and 27 touchdowns. Against the big boys so far, Heater has rushed for a respec table 355 yards, getting 4.7 yards a po in leading the Wildcats in rushing. The fullback is Hubert Oliver, a soph who was the surprise of the '77 season. Oliver's excellent speed, acceleration and balance make him a perfect com- pliment (and blocker) to Heater. Oliver is rated as one of the finest athletes on the squad. he leads the team in offensive stars, the tokens of ap- preciation the coaching staff doles out. The defensive unit has played three excellent games (all wins) and one horrible game (a 41-26 loss to Texas Tech). The leading tackler on the squad is right linebacker Sammy Giangar- della, a smallish, slow, but hardnosed, extremely strong and very well- conditioned player. The fact that safety Dave Liggins is the second leading tackler on the squad might hint at some deficiencies in the interior line. It should also be noted that in the only loss so far this year, the run oriented Red Raiders of Texas Tech rushed for 350 yards. Wayne State coach John Howard ', described the Tartars as "young and aggressive, but inconsistent." "WE NEED TO cut down on mistakes," he said before the game. "We play well for two-thirds of the game and then we fall apart." The Wolverines handled Wayne State well in the first two matches, but then fell behind in the third, for the first time AP Photo that night. The Tarters scored early in the last game and advanced to 7-2 before the n over the surprised spikers managed to fight es to none, back and score seven points, making the game 9-7, before Wayne State could score again. IN SPITE of the win, the Wolverines were not satisfied with their play. "We played slowly, we didn't play up to par," commented team captain Beth Major. "We could have played much, much better. We had a little trouble with our serving,' she added. Coach Sandy Vong was also a bit disappointed with the way his team played. "I guess you can play poorly and still win,"-he said. "It was not one of our better games." "The girls have been tired, many of them have got the flu," he explained.
