+-=---i a The Michigan Daily Thursday, October 5, 1978-Page 5 Community3 -High OK to reopen today By KEVIN ROSEBOROUGH Ann Arbor Community High School, closed since Monday after the carbon monoxide poisonings of 100 students and faculty, will reopen this morning. Tests performed yesterday and Tuesday by Michigan Department of Health officials have shown the air in the school to be completely normal sin- ; Fce a door in the vent system was closed, said Ann Arbor Schools spokesman Robert Moseley. ACCORDING TO Moseley, in- vestigators in the school discovered an open service door leading to the exhaust system of the building's fur nace. On Tuesday the unit was run with the door open and the carbon monoxide content pf the air went up immediately, according to Health Department monitors. With the door closed, the carbon monoxide content in the air rapidly dissipated. "We've had totally normal readings since Tuesday," said Moseley. "Since the problem has been alleviated, school will be open (Thursday)." Moseley said the only departure from a normal day of classes will be a 9:00 a.m. general assembly to inform the students exactly what happened. THE BOILER of the furnace was in- spected in July by a representative of _;ntinental Casualty, the school district's insurance company. It was inspected again on September 5 by a schooldistrict services representative. l° The last person to examine the furnace was Ann Arbor School District Assistant Superintendent Ralph LaJeunesse. LaJeunesse, in charge of all school district furnace maintenance, went to Community High School on F'riday, September 29 to make sure that the two previous inspections were com- pleted. "The boiler was tagged by both in- spectors,'" said LaJeunesse. "The doors aren't part of the routine check. They are often removed for repair work." He blamed "human error" for the open door that sent 100 persons to four .local hospitals. None of the 100 were seriously injured. "There is no question that the inspec- tors will look at the doors in the future," said LaJeunesse. He added that the complete heating systems of all other district schools were being reexamined. Parties Isplit over convention (Continued from Page 1) through legislative amendments. GOVERNOR MILLIKEN 'supports the party on the convention issue. Ac- cording to Milliken's press secretary, Paula Holmes, the governor feels the present constitution has worked very well. "The fact that it is one of the least amended constitutions in the country proves that it has done a good job," said Holmes. Holmes said this is true despite the number and magnitude of con- stittutional changes being dealt with in this election. There will be 11 con- stitutional amendment proposals on the ballot this November. "Legislation through amendments is a perfectly valid approach to issues like tax limitation," explained Holmes. If Proposal A does pass on November 7th, an election would be held in the spring in which each district in the state would pick a delegate to represent them at the constitutional convention. The convention would then take place in the fall of next year. 6(Y Ann Arbor's Cornerstone of Beauty HAQlQnCOMPANY Why go to the corner drug store when you can come to our professional beauty salon and purchase professional iroducts such as, " KMS Nuceoprotein Jhirmack "*RPcAL-n Highland Announces its Audio a a "y 4 '" i 4 ~k , r5 Y . , .4 's -I a ANYONE CAN MAKE A MISTAKE.
