EAST CLASSIC, 5-4: Dent, Jackso By The Associated Press BOSTON-Bucky Dent rallied the New York Yankees with a three-run homer in the seventh inning and Reggie Jackson applied the finishing touch with a home run in the eighth as the 1977. World Series champions hung on for a 5- 4 victory over the Boston Red Sox and won the American League East title in 4 playoff yesterday. The Yankees, East champions for the third straight year, will begin the best- of-five AL championship playoff series at Kansas City against the Royals tonight. Dent, despite pain from a foul ball off his shin, ripped an off-speed pitch from former teammate Mike Torrez into the screen in left field, putting the Yankees ahead for good 3-2. n push Southpaw Ron Guidry earned his 25th victory against only three losses, with tw late-inning relief from Rich Gossage. S Gossage, after yielding two runs in ye the eighth, ended the uprising by get- he ting Butch Hobson on a fly ball for the le second out of the inning and striking out ze dangerous George Scott. N The Red Sox, who forced only the second playoff in AL history by winning o their last eight games of the regular sa season, took a 2-0 lead, but Torrez, the Yankees' World Series pitching hero a hi year ago while playing out his option, w was unable to hold the advantage. Yanki Guidry, who hurled two consecutive wo-hit shutouts against the Red Sox in eptember, was nicked for a run as 39- ear-old Carl Yastrzemski drilled a fmer into the right field stands ading off the second. It was Yastr- emski's 17th homer of the season and o. 383 of his illustrious career. The Red Sox added a run in the sixth n a double by Rick Burleson, a acrifice and a single by Jim Rice. The Yankees, checked on just two its by Torrez for six innings, rallied ith one out in the seventh. Singles by Chris Chambliss and Roy past White started the rally. Pinch hitter Jim Spencer flied to left for the second out, but Dent followed with a curving shot into the friendly screen for a homer, his fifth of the year. .The Yankees got another run in the inning,as Mickey Rivers walked, stole second and scored on Thurman Mun- son's double'to left center. Munson, who had struck out his first three times at bat against Torrez, connected against Reliever Bob Stanley. The Yankees got the decisive run in the eighth when Jackson led off against Stanley with a towering drive into the center field bleachers for his 27th homer of the season. In the bottom of the eighth, Jerry Remy doubled and Yastrzemski singled him home for Boston's third run. Bosox Carlton Fisk then singled and Fred Lynn delivered an RBI single before Gossage retired Hobson and Scott. Andy Hassler replaced Stanley afte Jackson's homer and had to give wayt Dick Drago in the ninth. The Red So were unable to catch up agains Gossage, who recorded his 27th sav despite a two-run Boston eighth. The Red Sox, who led New York by 14 games on July 19, before the Yankees began their comeback, made a game but vain bid to pull out a victory in the eighth. Remy led off the inning with a groundi double down the right field line and, af ski's line single to center. Yastrzemski came around on singles by Fisk and Lynn before Hobson flied to right and Scott struck out toend the uprising. LOOK FOR I.M.
