NGRY IRISH HOST PURDUE:
an Herrmann Purduce?
pa
By ALAN FANGER
im Young has a tough act to follow.
{
I
The Purdue Boilermaker head coach, lOis team, riding the
reins of a 2-0 record, will be plotting to riddle the Notre
Daine defense in the same fashion that Michigan did in last
Saturday's 28-14 win over the Fighting Irish. r
( onsidering the sterling performances Young has
received from quarterback Mark Herrmann and the
defensive unit, and taking in mind Notre Dame's sluggish
outing against Missouri and collapse at the hands of
Michigan, one would have to rate Purdue's chances against
the'Irish as good.
There is one element working against the Boilermakers,
however.
T'he Fighting Irish are mad. Hopping mad. Beneath this
steep tradition of victory lies two consecutive losses at
hone. And nobody, but nobody in South Bend can bear to
witness a third straight embarrassment on the hallowed
grounds of-Notre Dame Stadium. It would be an unrelished
first for the Irish, who have never lost their first three
games.
Heartbreak befell the Baylor Bears in a 25-21 loss to
Kentucky, but the boys from Waco should be primed and
ready to upset Ohio State in Columbus. The Buckeyes rolled
up 300 yards rushing against Minnesota, as the offense
revived itself following an abysmal performance against
Fenn State.
Can lightning strike twice in the same week? The Indiana
Hoosiers think it's a possibility as they host Nebraska
following a 144 upset of Washington.
As for stopping Cornhusker running threats I.M. Hipp
and Rick Berns, the Hoosiers hope they cah mobilize some
quick linemen into pursuit. "We have a very fast line, but
they're going to have to get outside before Hipp does,' said
linebacker Coach Wally Neel.
Neel explained that "keying" on the speedy Hipp won't be
advantageous. "If you do that, then they can counter with
Berns into the middle or throw it."
The first full Saturday of non-conference action in the Big
Ten finds four teams crossing the Great Divide to face Pac-
10 and Big Eight opponents.
The Los Angeles Coliseum turf will be trampled a second
time when Minnesota takes on UCLA Saturday night. The
Bruins will be out to avenge a 28-24 shocking at the hands of
mediocre Kansas, a game in which they fumbled two
kickoffs down near their end zone.
Down in Tucson, Iowa and Arizona, two teams staked
down toward the bottom of their respective conferences,
tangle in a game that serves as a tune-up for the rough
conference season ahead.
Northwestern travels to Boulder to tackle the undefeated
Buffaloes, and the Wildcats will have to tally much more
than their three points per game average if they are to
survive the first quarter of action.
In another battle of virtual nonentities, mwinless Illinois
meets 2-1 (don't be misled) Syracuse. Illinois, like
Northwestern, has mustered out but ten points in three
games this season. The Orangement, meanwhile, yielded a
whopping 49 points to an Eddie Smith-less Michigan State.
Oregon is at Wisconsin to round this weekend's Big Ten
slate, a game which will feature little scoring and lots of
loose footballs.
NOTRE DAME QUARTERBACK Joe Montana (left) and Ohio State tailback Ron Springs have split goals this weekend.
Montanaand his Irish teammates have their backs to the wall after consecutive losses to Missouri and Michigan. A win over
undefeated Purdue today at South Bnd is a must if Notre Dame is to salvage some respectability this season. Springs and his
cohorts battle the Baylor Bears (0-2) at Columbus in the Buckeyes' attempt to climb back into the top ten in the national
rankings. The Bucks followed their opening 19-0 whitewash at the hands of Penn State last weekend with a 27-10 pounding
of Minnesota.
