Murder suspect in
custody awaiting trial

S John Maddox, accused in the shooting
leath of University custodial super-
'isor William Van Johnson, was bound
wer for trial yesterday on an open
~iiarge of murder.
~ Van Johnson, 48, was gunned down
shortly after midnight on September
~2th at the School of Music on North
rampus. He died less than an hour later
University Hospital of multiple
~vounds to the chest.
ACCORDING to testimony given at
he preliminary examinatioui yester-
?~y, Maddox's ex-wife Glendia said she
livorced Maddox in 1970 but continued
~olive with him until last April. Glendia
ad ox worked for Van Johnson as a
~stodian.
After he moved out of her Ann Arbor
~iome, Ms. Maddox admitted to starting
Va relationship" with her supervisor
Van Johnson. This displeased Maddox
~ reatly and he often called her when he
as drinking and discussed it with her,
'he testified. On September 10, Maddox
wld her "If he couldn't have his family
then no one could," referring to their
~our children. He also said he had hired
~. hit man to shoot Van Johnson, she

According to Ms. Maddox's
~estimony, Maddox drove up next to her

his own and told her that "this would be
the night" he would do something she

would never forget for the rest of hei
life, a threat that he'd made the pasi
summer. He then drove north, away
from the School of Music. "He was ac~
ting very strange," she said, "like h~
always has been when he drinks."
Ms. Maddox drove into the parking
lot at the rear of the School of Music and
waited for Van Johnson to arrive. HE
pulled ifl approximately five minutes
later in a University van with thre
other University employees. Maddoii
was pulled in directly behind the van,
she told the court.
From her vantage point, Ms. Maddox
said, she could see her ex-husband, bul
Van Johnson stood out of her vie~
behind the van. She said they spokE
"for three or four minutes," then shE
saw Maddox pull a handgun. She heard
gunfire and saw the flashes from thE
barrel of the weapon, but did not se
who was hit. At that point she saw Vain
Johnson run into the building clutching
at himself.
MS. MADDOX said she went up to her
ex-husband and told him he was now in
deep trouble. She said he mumbled
something about turning himself in to
police and drove off.
Maddox was at large for two days,
but turned himself in to police early
Thursday morning, September 14. He is
being held without bond in Washtenaw
County Jail. He will be arraigned in
Circuit Court on October 5 before JudgE
William Ager.
