LEADS BOSTON B'Y TWO The Michigan Daily-Thursday, September 21, 1978-Page 15 Yanks bombed, 8=1; Phils lead Bucs by 2 Tigers pull down Sox By DAVE RENBARGER Special to The Daily DETROIT-It was tough to tell the ond place team from the fifth place ,am last night at Tiger Stadium, as the lgers absolutely crushed the Boston Led Sox, 12-2, in a game that wasn't as ;lose as the score indicated. And it wasn't a game that the Red Sox vanted to lose in their on-again, off- gain run at the New York Yankees, ho split a double-header with the allar-dwelling Toronto Blue Jays. THE BOSOX COULD have inched to within a game of the New Yorkers, but nstead are two games back, victimized y a 15 hit Tiger assault and the nasterful pitching of Dave Rozema. Rozema lost a bid for his second con- ecutive shutout when Jim Rice con- ected for a meaningless two-run Omer in the ninth. Prior to that, it was all Detroit at the late. Beleaguered Boston manager on Zimmer sent four pitchers to the hound, but none of them could halt troit's hot bats." DH Rusty Staub led the hit parade oing two for three with a homer and our RBIs. But there were plenty of IB~bt~ Sktniwg other heroes like Lou Whitaker, Aurelio Rodriguez and Ron LeFlore, to name a few. That trio accounted for five hits, six RBIs and seven runs scored bet- ween them. SUPPORTED BY an air-tight defen- se to go along with the offensive show, Rozema (9-10) tossed a six-hitter in going the distance for the seventh time in his last eight outings. The befuddled Boston batsmen were hitting everything into the ground, as eviden- ced by the 15 put-outs at first base. Rick Burleson and Jerry Remy began the game by scratching singles to put Rozema into a jam. But the slender right-hander mowed down Rice, Carl Yastrzemski and Carlton Fisk to end Boston's biggest threat until the final inning. The Tigers immediately showed that they appreciated Rozema's pit- ching, nicking Red Sox starter Mike Torrez with a run on two hits in their half of the first. With one down, Whitaker sliced a stand-up double into the rightfield cor- ner. Staub stepped up and knocked in his 112th run of the year with a bouncer into centerfield. That RBI total, second only to Rice's 131, was to rise to 115 later on as Staub's three-run homer highlighted a six-run Tiger outburst in the seventh. WITH THAT one run cushion, Rozema became virtually untouchable, retiring 24 out of the next 26 Red Sox. Remy was the only one to do much damage, coming up with four of the Red Sox hits. Meanwhile, the Tigers picked up two more runs in the fourth with the help of the shodldy Boston infield. Detroit parlayed one error, two singles and one double into a 3-0 advantage. After coming up empty on a bases- loaded, no-out situation in thefifth, Whitaker broke the game open with a three-run homer in the sixth to make it 6-0. Adding insult to injury, the Tigers scored six more times in the seventh, sending ten men to the plate to the delight of the 16,689 fans. The big blows in the frame were a two-run double by LeFlore and Staub's three-run homer. The Red Sox will attempt to get back onto the trail of the Yankees tonight when they close out the four game series with the Tigers. Dennis Ecker- sley will pitch for Boston while the Tigers, attempting to gain a split in the series, and only their fourth victory over the Red Sox all year, will counter with Milt Wilcox. By The Associated Press TORONTO - Toronto's Rick Bosetti and Bob Bailor hammered successive triples in the second inning yesterday, knocking New York ace Ron Guidry out of the game and pacing the Blue Jays to an 8-1 victory over the Yankees in the first game of a doubleheader. Guidry, who had lost only twice in 24 decisions, lasted just 1% innings again- st a fired-up Toronto team. The Blue Jays got 13 hits in support of Mike Willis, 3-6, who was making his first start of the season. * * * Chicago 5, Pittsburgh 1 CHICAGO - Righthander Mike Krukow fired a four-hitter and Bill Buckner drove in two runs with a single and a sacrifice fly to help the Chicago Cubs to a 5-1 victory over the Pit- tsburgh Pirates yesterday. The triumph snapped Pittsburgh's seven-game winning streak and pushed the Pirates two games off the pace set by the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East. * * * Philadelphia 4, Montreal 2 MONTREAL - Greg Luzinski and Mike Schmidt hit back-to-back home runs in a three-run sixth inning as the Philadelphia Phillies downed the Mon- treal Expos 4-2 last night. Randy Lerch, 10-8, scattered eight hits, including a two-run homer by Tony Perez, before getting relief help in the ninth from Ron Reed. Vocal Selections from 30 Broadway Musicals- at. rzG4~r 115 E.
