It's always tougher the second time around. But for a seasoned intramural veteran like Jeff Liebster, that doesn't mean it can't taste just as good as the first one. Liebster, known in some circles as "a professional IM player," has feasted on several individual and team awards in his six years at Michigan, including the Earl Riskey Award (Athlete of the Year) in 1974-75 and 1975- 76 and Manager of the Year awards last year and in 1974-75. This year he and his team, The Canyon, will be defending titles in paddleball, track and free throw shooting. They will also be after their second straight Independent Division softball championship this season, which opened last Sunday with qualifying rounds. Liebster is confident that his team this year is as good as ever, and that the team will make a more- than-worthy defense of its title. "We're gonna be tough-there's no doubt about it," Liebster said. "We haven't played a game yet, but we've had six scrimmages and we've mercied everybody we've played." Liebster is especially pleased with the performances thus far of three new players, all of whom are first year law students. Liebster and most of his teammates also go to Michigan's law school. The Canyon acquires most of its players through the posting of notices throughout the Law Quad. Liebster requests people who are interested in "playing on a good, competitive team" and holds tryouts for all sports, not just softball. "We think we're the best, and we'll take the best players," Liebster said. "If a guy gets cut, he can come back and try out for another sport." Still, the Canyon maintains a nucleus of about 10 players for all the sports, Liebster said. It's obvious that this type of organization doesn't go on for most other intramural teams, and therein lies. the ingredient for success. But the organization spreads onto the playing field too. "We work hard on things that other teams don't even know exist-like where to make your cutoff throws, how to take extra bases ... Still, isn't the purpose of intramurals to have fun, and not take things so seriously? "Sure we take things seriously," Liebster said, "but it's fun to win.' So it would seem that what separates the good teams from the mediocre ones is more than just talent. It's learning the fundamentals of the game.. It's learning how to play as a team. It's learning how to play hard and seriously, yet being able to have fun at the same time. And it's having a co-ordinating force behind all this. . * * * IM INFO ... The IM softball season, as in the past, consists of a two-game regular season, followed immediately by single game elimination playoffs ... Teams that win at least one of their two games qualify for the 'A' playoffs, while two-game losers qualify for the 'B' playoffs ... Thus, every team is guaranteed at least three games and as many as seven ... i v; ° a _ _ xf , 4 v .F" r ..
