Blue booters open with 12-0 ampage By ERIC OLSON If last nights game is any indication of the Michigan Soccer Clubs' strength, then they may rival the football team as the fall's most successful sport. The Blue booters scored.an impressive twelve goals in a shutout romp over Faithway Baptist College. Leading the goal onslaught was forward Walt Bianchi who had five, in- cluding four in a row in the first half. The contest was scoreless until the 19 minute mark when forward Dave Ritchie broke in on goal and scored on a through pass from Ihor Fedorowycz. Then Bianchi went on his scoring spree as he tallied four goals in just under 11 minutes. Two of his goals were unassisted. John Schaefer drew the assist on his first goal and Bob Zack on the second. Richie and Fedorowycz each added to the Michigan attack with two goals apiece. Fedorowycz also assisted on three goals. Goalies Richard Mathews, Dave Peress, and Jeff Boudin shared duties in the shutout victory. The defense of Ian Cath, Tom Cohen, and Zack per- mitted just three Faithway shots on goal. For the game Michigan had 23 shots on goal and six corner kicks. The club's next match is Thursday (7:30) at Ferry Field aganist the Graduate Club. Cecil Cooper's second home run of the game had tied the score 3-3 in the top of the eighth against Ed Figueroa, 18-9. In the bottom of the inning, the Yankees loaded the bases on a hit bat- man and a pair of walks, the second to pinch hitter Cliff Johnson, who fouled off seven pitches before getting the base on balls from loser Bill Travers, 10-11. WITH THE infield in, Rivers drove a ball off shortstop Robin Yount's glove, delivering the winning run. The Brewers tied the score on Cooper's first home run in the third in- ning and a homer by sixto Lezcano in the fourth. In the Yankees sixth, Chris Cham- bliss opened with a single and raced to third when Cooper booted Craig Net- tles' grounder. Roy White followed with a fly ball to Larry Hisle, and Chambliss raced home just ahead of the throw for This Week in Sports Here we are again, just as we promised, with another week's worth of sporting events to inform you of. Unlike last week, however, we have more intercollegiate athletics to report on. So, without further ado, here is what's happening in the world of sports. COLLEGIATE COMPETITION First and foremost, Bo Schembechler and his Wolverine football team go up against the powerful Fighting Irish of Notre Dame this Saturday. This year's game will be played in South Bend, but if you don't have tickets, don't worry. The benevolent folks at ABC-TV are planning on telecasting the game. So if you can't find a ticket, then find a seat in front of the nearest TV and enjoy. The women's golf team will be up in East Lansing this Friday and Saturday (the 22nd and 23rd) when they participate in the Michigan State Invitational. The women finished 11th out of 19 schools entered in last week's Illinois State Invitational. Freshwoman Linda Drillock shot rounds of 85 and 83 to become Michigan's medalist. The volleyball team opens its 1978-79 season with a home match against Michigan State and finishes up the week playing 'in the Wayne State Invitational in Detroit this Saturday. And finally, the cross country team will compete in the Springbank International Road Race in London, Ontario this Sunday. COLLEGE FOOTBALL NCAA action continues this week with a smattering of interesting matchups. THE CONSECUTIVE homers by Jackson and Piniella marked the third time this season that the Yankees have hit two in a row. On each of the other occasions, the homers were hit by Chambliss and Nettles. Cooper got one of the runs back with a two-out homer in the third inning against Figueroa, who went the distan- ce and allowed seven hits. The Yankees loaded the bases in the bottom of the third on walks to Rivers, Willie Randolph and Piniella, but Travers struck out Chambliss, ending the threat. Then Lezcano tied the score in the fourth. THE INDIANS cut the lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the first on Andre Thorn- ton's three-run homer, his 1st of the season. Orioles 10, Indians 3 CLEVELAND - Rookie Gary Renicke cracked his first major league grand slam home run, Billy Smith added a three-run triple and Eddie Murray scored four times, leading the Baltimore Orioles to a 10-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians. Roenicke, called up from Rochester of the International League Sept. 1, hit his second home run of the season, highlighting a five-run first inning off Cleveland starter David Clyde, 7-11, who was knocked out during the uprising. the indians cut the lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the first on Andre Thornton's three-run homer, his 31st of the season. Baltimore starter Scott McGregor, 15-13, then settled down and pitched shutout ball until relieved by Dave Stanhouse in the ninth. Roenicke drove in his fifth run of the game in the second inning on a fielder's choice. Baltimore stretched its lead to 9-3 in the fifth on Smith's bases-loaded triple. Jerry Remy's run scoring single in the 11th inning gave Boston a 5-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers last night, keeping the Red Sox 21/2 games behind the New York Yankees in the American League East.
