age 10-Tuesday, September 19, 1978-The Michigan Daily WILL BE OUT 4-6 WEEKS Pufek runs into hard luck again By ERNIE DUNBAR With one of the most important ames of the season approaching this ieekend, the last thing Bo chembechler wanted to worry about ias replacing injured players. Yet that is one of' Schembechler's pore immediate tasks as he prepares or the showdown with Notre Dame in outh Bend this Saturday. MOST prominent among those who ;ailed to survive the Illinois victory is ffensive tackle Bill Dufek, who'll miss rom four to six weeks with a break of he fifth metatarsal bone near the little oe on his left foot. "The injury to Dufek is not the same one as he broke last year," Schembechler said, referring to the injury prior to the 1977 season, forcing the 1976 consensus All-Big Ten tackle to miss the entire schedule. Schembechler explained that, left guard John Arbeznik knocked his man into Dufek, causing the injury. "He'll have a walking cast for four weeks and then it will take him a couple weeks to get back into shape." THE INJURY to Dufek is especially a tough blow to the offensive line, since that is one aspect of the Illinois game Schembechler was dissatisfied with. "We didn't throw well, we just didn't have the protection. The protection is what makes me mad," Bo said as he analyzed the 31-0 Michigan victory. With Dufek out, senior Jon Giesler will move to Dufek's strong tackle position, with' sophomore Dan Kwiatkowski filling in at Giesler's quick tackle slot. "This injury is not as hard to come back from as the one last year," said Schembechler. "We hope to have him (Dufek) back. I think we can be more optimistic about him coming back than we were a year ago."~ Asked whatrtheloss of Dufek would do to the strength of the offensive line, Schembechler said, "I don't know that. It all depends on how the younger guys come along." THE OTHER casualties were not as serious as Dufek. Tight end Gene Johnson has two sore knees after a series of mishaps. "Johnson was clipped on a punt, then Huckleby got messed up on a pass pattern and hit him on the knee. Leach ran right up his legs on one play," Schembechler said of his tight end who managed one reception good for 15 yards against Illinois. "We hope to have him, but I'm not sure at this point." Another member of the offensive line, center Steve Nauta suffered a sprained ankle but doesn'tappear to be serious. "We're optimistic about him coming back unless something happens," Schembechler said. Two running backs incurred injuries.. as well. Tailback Harlan Huckleby had a pinched nerve in his neck, but will be able to play against Notre Dame. Huckleby's backup, Stanley Edwards, has a sprained ankle, but should see action if needed. (Sat. night) Detroit judge makes save-MeCourt stays Bo's nemesis . .. .. aDevine spoiler SCHEMBECHLER made it clear yesterday just how much Saturday's clash with Notre Dame means to his football team. "This is the most important non-conference game we've played at Michigan-period," he said emphatically. With that statement, Schembechler removed any doubts about where this game ranks on this year's schedule. While this game indeed is the finest early test a Michigan team has faced since Schembechler begin in 1969, deep down inside there must be another challenge for the head coach. Since arriving in Ann Arbor, Schembechler has managed a near perfect 24-1-2 non-conference record. He suffered that single defeat during his freshman campaign when the Missouri Tigers ripped Michigan 40-17. And guess who coached the Tigers? It was the same coach who'll be op- posite Schembechler Saturday-Dan Devine. Yes, Dan Devine is the only coach in 27 non-conference games to inflict defeat upon Bo. Come Saturday in South Bend before a partisan home crowd of 59,075, Devine has another chance to further mar Bo's illustrious record, If you think that hasn't registered in Bo's mind more than once, you'd better think again. Informed at his weekly press luncheon that Devine's Missouri team had scored more points on Bo than any other team, Schembechler said jokingly, "Nowvyou guys are really pissing me off. God, that's only 10 years ago!" Some of the writers asked Bo whether he has gone back and looked at any of the films from that Missouri defeat to see if he could spot any coaching weaknesses Devine may possess. "Hell no. This isn't baseball. Football's changed in ten years." 'A well-endowed team' The one thing Schembechler admitted hadn't changed about Notre Dame during that time is that they continued to win, and win, and win. Last year the Irish went 11-1, losing to Mississippi, and laying claim to the mythical national championship. "They're a well endowed team," remarked Bo. "They've got a good quarterback, good backs and linebackers. They're a talented team. They're one of the top teams in the nation, don't you forget that." While Bo lauded his opponents, the questions persisted as to how this talented a team could manage to lose its opening game, at home, to Missouri. The Tigers were no powerhouse last year. They went 4-7 last year and were inexperienced entering the contest with the Irish. Still they managed to pull out a 3-0 upset, ending Notre Dame's streak of 131 games in which they had not been shut out. It also ended their winning streak at ten, tied for longest in the nation with Alabama. So does all this make Schembechler think any less of his opponents. "They (Notre Dame) should have beat Missouri. There's no question there. The circumstances had to be absolutely right for them (Missouri) to win that game." Since that embarrassing loss, Notre Dame has been preparing solely for the Wolverines, thanks to a week off this past weekend. Two weeks to wait for anything is a long time. But when your football team has been humiliated in front of the rabid alumni and home fans, you can be certain that those inter- vening practice sessions have not been a joyful experience. Training on grass Does Bo think that added practice will help or hinder Notre Dame? "I don't know. I've never been in that situation. We've never had two weeks off." One thing's for sure: The extra practice without a game to worry about couldn't have hurt Michigan's chances any, considering that Notre Dame Stadium has natural turf, a surface the Wolverines have gone 1-4 on the past two years. "We've worked out on it (grass 40-50 per cent of the time," Schembech- ler said of his previous workouts. "That percentage will probably be higher this week. We'll train a little more on grass, but your overall routine doesn't change that much." The practices may be virtually the same in nature, but you can rest assured that the intensity will hit levels like none of the Michigan players have ever experienced this early in the season. "I think they're looking forward to it, there's no question about that," Schembechler said of his team's reaction to the game. "We all know they are a national football power." But so is Michigan, which means just one thing: For the first time in Bo's ten year reign Michigan fans will be treated to a real non-conference game instead of some of the charades we've been forced to endure in recent years. 1 FREE DELI VERY* ON ORDERS OF $5.00 OR MORE After 5:00 P.M. *50C charge for orders under $5.00 d Texas Instrument CALCULATORS and accessories IN STOCK- , SPECIAL thru Oct. 31, 1978 Buy a TI-58 Advanced Pro- grammabale Calculator with plug in solid state software modules or a TI-59 Super Powerful Card Programmable with solid state software modules and receive a $12.95 Programming Guidebook FREE from TI. DETROIT (AP) - A federal judge ruled yesterday that the National Hockey League compensation requirements for teams that sign free agents are an illegal restraint of trade. Judge Robert DeMascio declared that Detroit Red Wing center Dale McCourt did not have to report to the WELCOME STUDENTSI TRY OUR HAIRSTYLISTS: SHARON-KEN OLIVER-LLOYD' DASCOLA STYLISTS Liberty off State Los Angeles Kings as compensation for Detroit's signing of goalie Rogie Vachon. Vachon became a free agent after playing out his option last year with the Kings. The 21-year-old McCourt, who enjoyed a sensational rookie season in Detroit last year, filed the lawsuit after an arbitrator made him the conpensation to the Kings for the loss of Vachon. The compensation rule imposes a "perpetual restriction on a player's inherent right to freely contract for his services," DeMascio said. The judge cited a suit filed by former Baltimore Colt player John Mackey against the National Football League, which resulted in a court ruling against the NFL's so-called Rozelle Rule. That rule imposed similar penalties on teams which signed free agents. Like the Rozelle rule, DeMascio said the NHL's Rule 9A "applies to all players without regard to their status or ability." It "unreasonably restrains trade and commerce" in violation of a provision of the Sherman Antitrust Act, DeMascio said.
