PERRY BULLARD'S CAMPAIGN OFFICE SATURDAY, September 16-7:30 p.m. NORTH UNIVERSITY between Thayer & State By GARY GERESY A James Kubalko, the new director of the University's Department of Disabled Student Services, says he is going to need more money from the government if his office is to implement some of his ideas. Kubalko, who took over his new post on Monday, runs the office himself along with his secretary. Though the 32- year-old director has many ideas, the office is only budgeted with $5,000 spen- ding money. "WE COULD always use more money," Kubalko said. He added that he is depending on federal funds because he doesn't see the University '"as a viable source of money." But whether or not his office receives more funds, Kubalko said, "the im- mediate concern is meeting the needs of the students as they come in. Among Kubalko's many ideas is a plan calling for bi-monthly newsletters to be distributed throughout the cam- pus informing students of new developments in the department. HE IS ALSO planning an orientation program for disabled students. "I want to set up a program for the' new student coming into the University, especially for the blind and visually impaired to help them find their way around the campus," Kubalko said. Kubalko, whose department is located on the second floor of the union, is no newcomer to working with disabilities. He worked with disabled students for nine years as a teacher and administrator in the Livonia public school system, and he, himself is disabled. "I have a slight problem with my left leg. That's how I got interested in special ed.," Kubalko said. Kubalko replaced Albert Watson as the department director.
