"I'd say it's a tremendous advantage but, of course, I'm biased," Hayes told the Chicago Football Writers yesterday in a telephone hookup. Hayes was referring to the fact that his sixth-ranked Buckeyes have yet to play a game while Penn State already has played two games and won them both. DUFFY DAUGHERTY, the great authority used to say you improve most between your first and second games and we haven't even played yet," said Hayes. Hayes has a record of 23-3-1 for season openers but admits "I've had better players than the teams we've played but Penn State is rated high and could be the best team we've ever opened against." The last time the two teams met was in 1976 and Hayes came off with a 12-7 victory over Penn State. Coach Joe Paterno concedes the Nittany Lions will have some advantage in having played two games but not as big as Hayes believes. In fact, Paterno, also in a telephone interview, sees some drawbacks in the early start. "I think it's somewhat of an advantage, how much I don't know," said Paterno, whose team had to go down to the final seconds to defeat Temple 10-7 and came back with a 26-10 victory over Rutgers. "I would have preferred one game instead of two," said Paterno who contends Penn State did not move up the two games deliberately. "THE TEMPLE game was scheduled for November 18 when we'd be in our final exams," said Paterno. "We tried to play it the 14th of October but Temple was scheduled against Cincinnati." Although Ohio State recruited highly heralded quarterback Art Schlichter, Rod Gerald will start for the Buckeyes because, "Gerald is a senior and our quarterback and Schlichter is a freshman and has limitations," said Hayes. "GERALD WORRIES us as much as anybody," said Paterno. "And their tailback Ron Springs is outstanding. They'll play typical Ohio State football, no fancy stuff. Stopping their running game is our No. 1 concern." Hayes expressed concern over Ohio State's ability to stop quarterback Chuck Fusina. "He's a fine quarterback," said Hayes. "Anytime you pass over 60 per cent it's phenomenal. They have a good defensive line, a strong kicking game and are well coached. "If you can't get heated up for the No. 3 (actually No. 5) team," said Hayes, "I don't know when you can get heated up."
