EVER T, CONNORS, BORG WIN The Michigan Daily-Sunday, September 10, 1978-Page 1 Begin your weaving around town by coming to the y Top seed sadvance in U.S. Open I L' -'WULD WET? 415 N. 5th Ave. (Kerrytown 1I), Ann Arbor, MI 48104 313 / 761-2466 NEW YORK (AP) - Wimbledon champion Bjorn Borg will play runner- up Jimmy Connors again and defending champion Chris Evert will play 16-year- old Pam Shriver today in the finals of the U.S. Open tennis championships. Playing in crisp, rain-freshened air but a brilliant, baking sun, Borg, the patient, versatile Swede, downed Vitas Gerulaitis - 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 yesterday. Connors came from behind in the third set to down 19-year-old John McEnroe in the other semifinal6-2, 6-2, 7-5. Evert, who will be trying to winher fourth consecutive U.S. Open crown, downed Wendy Turnbull easily, 6-3, 6-0, in a semifinal that was resumed yesterday morning after heavy rains Friday. Shriver overthrew top seed Martina Navratilova Friday, 7-6, 7-6, to become, the youngest finalist ever in the American championships. If Evert beats her, she would be the first woman to attain four in a row since 1935 when Helen Jacobs won her fourth. Borg did not get nearly so tough a match from Gerulaitis as both had predicted he would. They had been practicing together at Gerulaitis' home nearby, and both had said they were about even in practice matches. Gerulaitis held service only in the first and seventh games of the opening set. He broke for 2-4 but was not steady enough to ward off a final game break. Borg built a 4-1 lead in the next set. Gerulaitis held for 2-4, but got only three more points as Borg ran out the set. Gerulaitis began to combine accuracy with his quickness in the next game, though, and broke for 1-0, winning all four points. He stayed just a step ahead through the seventh game, in which Borg toughed out three deuces to hold at 3-4. But Borg evened it in the eighth game, when Gerulaitis double-faulted. Gerulaitis had break point at love in the next game, but Borg held service, hitting a good drop shot and waiting for three errors by Gerulaitis. Gerulaitis got another break for 6-5 when Borg's backhand went into the net on the second point of a deuce. But he blew his service game, forcing the tiebreaker, on three errors from near the net and one hit too long from the baseline. Borggot the first four points quickly. Gerulaitis got two in a row, then another for 3-5. But he fell hard after leaping for and missing a volley. He double-faulted on match point to give Borg the tiebreaker 7-4 and the match. Connors took the first two sets from McEnroe with relative ease. But after holding service in the second game of the third set, he watched the 19-year-old McEnroe become more aggressive and run off four games in a row for a 5-1 lead. But Connors, who is seeking to regain the title he lost to Guillermo Vilas last year, got fired up and won five in a row himself, for 6-5. He danced at the baseline after every winner. Beginning to serve for the match, Connors bounced and bobbed like a boxer. Charging up after each serve, he won the game at love, and was in another U.S. Open final. Evert, who has not dropped a single set on her route to the final, took just 32 minutes to finish off Turnbull when they returned Saturday morning. She had built a 3-1 lead in the 16 minutes they were able to play Friday. Turnbull did not hold service once Saturday, although she broke in the fifth and seventh games of the first set. The quick little Australian won only 10 points in the final set, and yielded the last eight games to Evert. Evert and Shriver never have played each other before, and the 23-year-old reigning champion was a little apprehensive about the unknown quantity. "I just have to start out very quickly, go for my shots and play my game. I can't afford to experiment against her," she said and recalled the tough time she had in the third round at Wimbledon last year from another youngster, Tracy Austin, who was 14 then.
