The Michigan Daily-Sunday, September 10, 1978-Page 3 POSSIBLE GUER RILLABASE A TTACKS k: Say it isn't so! The next time you cut the cheese in honor of your favorite celluloid mouse you better save a piece, because he'll be celebrating his birthday two months later. Mickey Mouse, the cornerstone of the ' Disney organization, has twitched his whiskers to the birthday song on September 19 for almost 50 years and they've just discovered the date is wrong. The cartoon creature's creation should really be marked at November 18, 1928 when his "Steamboat Willie" made its debut at the Colony Theater in New York. But when a Disney staffer in the 1930's thought it would be a good idea for American kiddies to celebrate Mickey's anniversary, he just pulled a date out of the air. The confusion has many people up in arms oven when to hold his 50th birthday party. Whatever date you choose, plan to catch the little animal on his cross-country whistle stop tour and join in the fun and parties. White tie and tails required, and of course-ears optional. There was speculation his "new course" for Rhodesia would include some form of general mobilization fot the country's 260,000 whites-many of whom are in a vengeful mood over the air disaster a week ago in which 48 OFFICIALS OF clack African states adjacent to Rhodesia, -articularly Zambia and Botswana, fear Smith will order cross-country raids to wipe out guerrilla bases in their countries. The forces of Nkomo, co-leader with Robert Mugabe of the Patriotic Front guerrilla alliance, are based mainly in Zambia, Mugabe's guerrillas are stationed in Mozambique. Despite the sentiment expressed by the Kenyan newspaper, which is not controlled by the government, Kenyan he said. "It is terrible - ortant that the ghastliness of ti., war does not brutalize us, especially the whites, and blunt our sensibilities to the fact that the most grievious suffering is still among the defenseless people in the tribal trust lands reservations." A WAR BULLETIN yesterday said Rhodesian troops killed nine guerrillas near the area where the plane was shot down. The communique reported 27 additional deaths in the past day, including eight guerrillas and "collaborators," five blacks killed in "crossfire" between guerrillas and Rhodesian soldiers and three black civilians allegedly killed by guerrillas. The six-year-old war claimed 227 lives last week, the government said. Rhodesia has a black population of 6.7 million. LEADERS OF black nations which shelter guerrillas on, Rhodesia's borders were reporter to be expecting imminent attacks against guerrilla bases in their territory. - _witnesses said 10 of the 18 persons who survived the crash of the CViscount liner in a remote area near the Zambian border were murdered by guerrillas. Joshua Nkomo, the guerrilla chief who met Smith secretly in Zambia last month in a new bid to end the guerrilla war, said his men downed the plane with a missile but denied they slaughtered survivors. He claimed that Rhodesia has been using Viscount craft to ferry military men and equipment. AFTER THE crash, a minister in Rhodesia's six-month-old biracial administration said the transition government would not be able to meet its Dec. 31 target for transferring power to the black majority. Rollo Hayman, co-minister of internal affairs, said at least four months would be needed after finalization of the as yet unpublished majority rule constitution before a referendum and universal suffrage elections could be held. In Nairobi, a Kenyan newspaper criticized Nkomo's guerrillas for shooting down the plane, saying they had discredited themselves and committed a "barbaric blunder." "WAR IS abhorrent and in itself barbaric," the mass-circulation Daily Nation said. "But combatants are expected th show some measure of restraint in their conduct. This in wartime .passes for decency. On this score, the guerrillas who shot down the plane and their leaders pass for' outright barbarians." The newspaper said the incident "ruined the nationalist's image" and "will cause more bloodshed." Kenya, a former British colony, is now ruled by its black majority, but has retained a large white population. Foreign Minister Munyua Waiaki said he was alarmed by rumors of a possible Rhodesian attack into Zambia. The minister left Saturday for the Zambian capital of Lusaka and said the trip was a sign of Kenyan solidarity with Zambia. IN LONDON, high-ranking British and American diplomats met to seek ways to avoid an escalation of the war. Foreign Secretary David Owen and several Americans took part, but officials refused comment. Zambia has asked Britain to try to prevent the expected Rhodesian retaliatory raid. In Salisbury, Anglican Bishop Paul Burroughs urged whites not to seek revenge for the crash of the Air Rhodesia Viscount airliner.
