Run, run, run and an occasional pass on third-and-twenty they point out. Well for those hardened critics we present the imaginative Bo. Treat yourself to this rare trip through the wit and wisdom of Glen E. Schembechler. September 12, 1978-"I'm nervous in this game of college football. No matter how you did it up, you didn't know what you've got. Illinois could beat a Mich- igan, 3-0 in Ann Arbor. September 16, 1978-Michigan 31, Illinois 0 "We fooled around too much. Illinois was better defensively. As openers go, we'll take it. It gives us a starting point from where we can improve." September 21, 1978-"This is our most important non-conference game. Notre Dame is a strong team in every respect." September 23-Michigan 28, Notre Dame 14 "We beat a great team today. All I know is that we beat Notre Dame and any time you do that it's something." September 29, 1978-"A let down is a possibility because so many people are congratulating us on last week. Duke is capable of beating us-they are a good football team." September 30, 1978-Michigan 52. Duke 0 "We were very much surprised that we could move the ball on their defense ... I was concerned." October 6, 1978-"They (Arizona) are not a team you can take lightly. I sincerely believe Arizona is going to be a tough opponent for us." October 7, 1978-Michigan 21, Arizona 17 "Every football team in America makes mistakes. We are not superhuman." October 10, 1978-"I would say they (Michigan State) are better than they were last year." October 14, 1978-Michigan State 24, Michigan 15 "My honest opinion is that their defense would never have stopped us. We stopped ourselves and we didn't stop them." October 20, 1978-"Wisconsin is a fine team. We are ready to run at them, but that doesn't mean we will run after them." October 21, 1978-Michigan 42, Wisconsin 0 "We've gotta long way to go. I don't think we were great today but we needed this game. It was a good confidence builder." October 27, 1978-"They (Minnesota) can do it. All they have to do is beat us and Michigan State. They have the personnel." October 28, 1978-Michigan 42, Minnesota 10 "Once we had them 28-3. I thought our defense was playing well enough to hold Minnesota." November 3, 1978-"Their (Iowa's) strength is their defense. Their defense is as good as any in the league." November 4, 1978-Michigan 34, Iowa 0 "Iowa is a good defensive team and underrated only because they have not been winning." November 7, 1978-"Hmmmm, God." November 11, 1978-Michigan 59, Northwestern 14 "A game like this doesn't show us much because we ran right through them. We didn't -even run the option that much. Basically all we did was hand off the ball and block." November 14, 1978-"What we want to do is keep them from scoring a lot." November 18. 1978-Michigan 24, Purdue 6 "I'm a little bit surprised. I didn't think we would get that much yardage rushing." November 20, 1978-"It is impossible for me to believe that Ohio State is anything but a great football team." November 25, 1978-Michigan 14, Ohio State 3 "We are happy we won. We can attribute this victory to the tenacity of the Michigan football team." Also November 25, 1978-"I think - - - USC is the best team in the nation. We'll probably be underdogs by a couple of touchdowns. November 30, 1978-John Robinson, USC football coach on previous quote-"Tell Bo Schembechler he's full of.. Wit and wisdom? QUARTERBACK RICK LEACH is pressured by Minnesota's defensive tackle Jim Ronan as-he attempts to pass in the 42-10 Wolverine victory. Leach was nine of 13 for 143 yards in the Homecoming game. Blue D braced for Trojans. (Continued from Page 5) Since Michigan's running defense is clearly better than its passing defense (witness the stats plus the Ohio State and Michigan State results) one might expect Robinson to take to the air on offense. Such speculation, however, cannot be taken seriously; not when Robinson's penchant for keeping the other guys guessing is recalled. Whatever the USC offense comes up with, Wolverine outside linebacker Jerry Meter willbe ready for it. "I haven't looked at USC that much yet, but I know that they have a good offense balance," said Meter, the defensive captain. "We've seen a little of both (running and passing teams) already this season. We'll have to combine our best defensive efforts to stop them." GO BLUE! DASCOLA STYLISTS Liberty off State S U. -E UArborland Maple Village 'A Michigan will be relying on its superior quickness rather than slugging it out with the massive line of the Trojans. "Michign's defense has always been quick," noted Robinson. "We're a strong group (on the line) physically. That's where a good part of the game will be decided." Wolverine defensive linemen like Curtis Greer and Dale Keitz must put on an effective rush to pressure McDonald, who is not a threat to run with the ball. And the fine linebacking trio of Simpkins, Meter and Any Cannivino, who got their combined hands in on 297 tackles, will hve to be flexible enough to contain both White's running and McDonald's passing. "The whole key to the game for us is to force them into making mistakes to create chances for our offense," summed up Meter. USC has one final weapon in its offensive arsenal that could come in 'handy in a tight game-piacekicker Frank Jordan. It was Jordan's dramatic, 37-yard field goal that knocked off Notre Dame with just two seconds left. On the season the senior booted 10 or 16 three- pointers.., , .. ., , ,.. 1
