Page 8-Sunday, December 10, 1978-The Michigan Daily The Michigan Daily-Sunday, Dec PENN S TA TE, ALABAMA CLASH IN S UGAR BOWL Big bowl games slated this year SUGAR BOWL JANUARY 1 at New Orleans, Louisiana PENN STA TE vs. ALABAMA They'll be "going for it all" down in New Orleans where top-ranked Penn State (11-0) puts its unblemished record on the line against No. 2 Alabama (10-1) in the annual Sugar Bowl classic to be played at 2 p.m. EST on New Year's Day. While Michigan coach Bo Schembechler believes USC and Oklahoma are the two toughest teams in the country, it will be the undefeated Eastern independent and the Southeastern Conference champion facing off in a battle for the mythical national championship, picked by the AP and UPI in January. Penn State's Joe Paterno and his roaring bunch boast awesome offensive linemen whose average weight is 2521/ pounds, while the talented trio of quarterback Fusina, fullback Matt Suhey and tailback Booker Moore, a Michigan native, toil in the Lion backfield. Fusina, who has led State to 22 wins in their last 23 games, has passed for 1859 yards and 11 touchdowns this season, good for a 56.6% competion rate. Suhey, a junior, has rushed for 726 yards and 7 touchdowns. Moore, a second year man from Flint Southwestern High School, the same school that sent Leach, tight end Gene Johnson and wingback Rodney Feasterto Michigan, has carried the ball for 602 yards and six touchdowns as a part time starter. Bolstering the offense, placekicker Matt Bahr connected on 22 field goals this year, setting a NCAA record. At the Alabama end of the field, senior quarterback Jeff Rutledge heads an all Birmingham, Alabama backfield that includes veteran halfback Tony Nathan (7 yards per carry), junior fullback Steve Whitman and sophomore Major Ogilvie at the other halfback spot. Rutledge tied and broke two Joe Namath records this year, and also threw 100 consecutive passes, without an interception, also a school record. His 13 touchdown passes this season tied Namath (1926) and Harry Gilmer (1945), while his 30 career touchdown throws broke Namath's record of 28. Defensively, Penn State is No. 1 in the country against the rush. Linebacker Lance Mehl, (96 tackles) and Tackles Matt Millen (54) and Bruce Clark (51), both of whom are finalists in the Lombardi trophy (Best Lineman) balloting, lead the Nittany Lions. Junior safety Pete Harris, younger brother of Franco of the Pittsburgh Steelers, is tops in the country at his position with 10 interceptions this season. For the Crimson Tide, whose only loss was to USC, 24-14, All-American tackle Marty Lyons (119 tackles) and linebacker Barry Krauss (112) show the way. , Who's going to win the game? Jimmy the Greek picks Alabama by 2 in his early line, but Tide coach Bear Bryant is playing it cool. "I'll let you guys (writers) decide," quipped Bryant. "But I think if we beat Penn State, we should have a good chance at the national championship." -DAN PERRIN COTTON BOWL JANUARY 1 at Dallas, Texas NOTRE DAME vs. HOUSTON Bowl meant a national championship for Notre Dame, this year's cotton won't be of that same variety. On this January 1, the tenth ranked Fighting Irish (8-3-0) will be confronted by the Southwest Conference champions, Houston, ranked ninth (9-2 % 0) at 2 p.m. on CBS.- Coach Bill Yoeman of Houston will put his best on the line, as he surprisingly returns to the Cotton Bowl for the second time in three years. (His latest trip was a win against Maryland on January 1, 1977). "I didn't think we'd make it this far," said Yoeman. The Cougars are led on offense by quarterback Danny Davis, one of Houston's three captains. Davis passed for 1053 yards this season, for a completion percentage of 49 per cent. He also threw for nine touchdowns. Backing up Davis in the Cougar backfield are seniors Emmet King and Randy Love. King carried the ball for an average of 6.0 yards per carry. His total rushing yardage this season was 1095 yards as he scored 5 touchdowns. Love, the Cougar's fullback, averaged 5.0 yards per carry, and 92.6 yards average per game. His net yardage was 1019 yards, scoring 9 touchdowns. On defense, Houston is better than statistics would indicate. "I didn't think we would be very good. But our defense came along, and we've played exceptionally well," said Yoeman. Leading the Houston defense is linebacker Dave Hodge. Hodge is one of two captains on defense. The other is-Jim Wells, but he's been sidelined for the whole season due to a foot injury. In contrast, Notre Dame features both a well seasoned defense and offense. Pacing the Irish defense are two top quality linebackers, All- American Bob Golic and Steve Heimkreiter. The duo accounted for 152 and 160 tackles respectively. On offense, the Irish sport an experienced attack. Commanding the Gold and Blue fighters is quarterback Joe Montana. The poised senior passed for 141 completions out of 260 attempts this year. His total yardage was 2010 yards, for 10 touchdowns. Behind Montana are two tough running backs. See MORE, Page 16 How abt 1 - .s "t ."
