LET'S BE TOTALLY illogical.
Michigan is going to win the Rose Bowl. Not because of the talent
on the team, not because Bo Schembechler is the most successful college
coach in this decade, not because of what Las Vegas has to say about the out-
come, but for a different reason.
Because.
Just because.
There is nothing tangible about the Wolverines game plan. It won't be a
pass pattern that decides the outcome of the battle, or a crucial tackle or a
turnover or even a last minute field goal.
Michigan will win because they are not supposed to. That is the secret to
Bo's 0-8-1 mark in season finales. Actually the figure is a slightly less em-
barrassing 0-4-1 in the games Michigan was favored. But, if the Wolverines
lose when they are expected to win, why not just reverse the procedure and
pick up a victory despite being the underdog.
Washington did it to the Wolverines in the last Rose Bowl. Stanford did it
six years earlier and USC two years prior to that. USC also did it in the 1977
Rose Bowl, but on that occasion they were equal to Michigan "on any given
day..." but New Year's.
All the Wolverines have to do is act like a team sadly outclassed, then
they might have a chance against the Trojans.
Here's the scene (remember, this game will be played near
Hollywood): Southern Cal takes the field amid tens of thousands of rabid
rooters. Their band members crisply in step and the famous mascot, the
charging White Stallion races up and down the sidelines to the apparent glee
of all Cardinal and Gold supporters.
Then the-Wolverines peek their collective heads out of the locker room,
trot quietly over to the bench and wait patiently for the game to start.
The coin is flipped, USC wins the toss and elects to receive.
Eleven Michigan men line up at the 40 yard line and Southern Cal
responds by throwing a helmet on the field. BUT HOLD ON! The Wolverines
don't fall over and die.
USC has a real battle on its hands and neither John Robinson or any of

Sorry Bo...
this makes three in a row
S IT DOWN BO. I've got some bad news.
Bo, whether you know it or not, we were friends for quite a while.
We've been tight ever since you spent New Years Day in the hospital
recovering from a heart attack while your football team lost a Rose Bowl
game. It was the first day of a new decade. I was just a kid then.
I was on your side after your team tied Ohio State in '73 and the
Buckeyes got the bowl nod. Soon after, I enrolled here and paid in part for
the right to root for you and your team. I sat behind the goal posts and earned
the right to defend your teams' occasional defeats when challenged by
friends that went to other schools.
And this year, I covered you and your team. I was there.
Bo, this may shock you a little, but we're no longer buddy-buddy. And
the really bad news I said I had for you is yet to come.
You're probably wondering how we could be breaking up, now, on our
way to the Rose Bowl. You're probably wondering how it could've happened,
to us, Bo 'n Hank.
It's like this Bo, ex-buddy, you run the football program like you were
protecting nuclear secrets. In fact, if I ever get some nuclear secrets, I'm
gonna give them to you to protect.
You run the football team like it was a clandestine operation. You do not
allow reporters to watch a Michigan practice - what are you guys doing
behind those sturdy brick walls?
When we come to see you after practice, you leave by the back door.
When one of our reporters asked you before the OSU game on Harlan
Huckleby's condition, you told him Huck wasn't hurt. Then Huck didn't play
in the game at all.
Your quarterback won't answer our phone calls.
The players I have talked with are super. Why do you treat them like
little kids? Why must we go through Mom and Dad down at sports
information to talk with them?
Wait a minute Bo, don't get mad, not yet. Sit down, please, I haven't
-even gotten to the bad news yet.
Some bad news, ( but not THE bad news) Bo, is that you win an awful lot.
You fill Michigan Stadium, and as long as you do you can tell reporters, even
those who were so close to you, like me (I was the one cheering for you four
years ago against Baylor), to suck the mop in a big way.
Now for the REALLY bad news: your team isn't going to beat Southern
Cal.
Charles White is too slippery and because he will freeze your linebackers
Paul McDonald will have all day to pick his receivers and toss them the ball.
We were both there two years ago when Vince Evans, the same Vince
Evans who today languishes on the bench of the Chicago Bears - he can't
even make it with the Bears! - had all day to pick his receivers and
consistently tossed them the ball.
