A Page 4-Sunday, December 10, 1978-The Michigan Daily The Michigan Daily-Sunday, De WHAT TO DO IN SMOG CITY LA:Melting pot of happenings Michigan's 11 game stats (10-1-0) USC's 11 game stat TEAM TOTALS By BRIAN MILLER In some ways a trip to California is like studying for final exams. It's not so much figuring out what there is to do as it is figuring out where to start. Furthermore, some of your time would be better spent in one area as opposed to another. But we aren't here to play mother. So we will just tell you what must be done (in California that is). The most famous tourist spot has to be Disneyland. Located in Anaheim, south of Los Angeles, this giant amusement park is still a popular spot for people of all ages. The park isopen from 10-6 Wednesday thru Friday and from 9-7 on Saturday and Sunday. It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. North of Anaheim and bordering Los Angeles is Hollywood. Movie stars abound here and so do movie tours. Universal Studios offer particularly interesting tours of their lots which include such sidelights as a stunt show or magic act. TELEVISION STUDIOS also seem to be quite popular with visitors and all major television networks have tours planned daily. If you want to see a show live,-that's fine, but there are a few things that you might like to know. Say, for example, you'd like to see the Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson. NBC Studios say tickets are available on the day of taping only, which is generally the case with all three TV networks. These tickets, which are free, can be picked up at NBC's studio beginning at 8:30 weekday mornings. The ticket situation varies from day to day. On some days people line up around 7:30 to get tickets while on other days the stock lasts until mid morning. To be on the safe side one should arrive by 8:30. Once you have tickets you must arrive at 5:30 that evening to gain entrance to the studio. Since they give out more tickets than there are seats (to insure a full house) some people with tickets don't get in. For the best chance of seeing the show plan to arrive around 3:00. Enough of these indoor events. The Pacific Ocean is no more than a 15-20 minute drive at the most. It's unusual that the weather will be warm enough to permit sunbathing on the beaches, but a trip to the shore is worth it. BOAT LOVESf will drool over the yachts moored in such places as Marina Del Ray. Also, the steamship Queen Mary is anchored in this area. Once the class of the sea, the Queen is now a floating museum. Tours are conducted daily but you'll have to call ahead to find out when. Times vary day to day. If the college itch bites a bit early there's always USC and UCLA to visit. In fact, if you plan on attending the Rose Bowl game the tickets for Michigan students will be distributed at USC, on the corner of Santa Barbara and Figueroa. Other Los Angeles sights of interest are Farmer's Market, Mann's (formerly Grauman's) Chinese Theatre, the Avenue of the Stars and the city's fine Art Museum. FOR THE not-so-entralled-with-culture crowd, the Los Angeles area does have its share of sporting_ events. The Kings (hockey) and the Lakers (basketball) will be in action at the Fabulous Forum. The Lakers play the New Orleans Jazz on December 26 and the Portland Trailblazers on the 29th. The Kings take on the Vancouver Canucks on the following day, and continue play when the Colorado Rockies come to town on New Year's night. The number for more Forum information is 674- 6000 and tickets are available at many locations. around the city. Unfortuntely, neither UCLA nor USC are scheduled for home basketball games until Janury 5th. NOT EVERYONE lives and breathes sports exclusively-some people live and breathe sports, food, and drink. And Los Angeles is one of the best places in the nation for good restaurants. Los Angeles eateries range from the super swank to the supersavers. For the adventerous, go to the corner of Wilshire and LaCienaga and head north, where you will see the famous "Restaurant Row." That strip is amazing-like four Washtenaw Avenues combined, but the establishments are nothing but the best-top quality all the way. Other places like the restaurants in the Bonaventure, Hyatt Regency and the Biltmore Hotels require suit and tie type of dress, a reservation and a prominent spot in the social register. Less expensive places include a multitude of spots like the popular Hamburger Hamlet chain, a psuedo-Big Boy with loads more class and a more complete menu. If you don't care for any of these suggestions, you don't have to sit around your hotel room. Las Vegas is a few hours to the east and it is open seven days a week, 24 hours a day. San Diego and Mexico are a mere 100 miles to the south and San Francisco is just a short 500 miles north. ANYONE INTERESTED in seeing the sights had better make some sgrt of transportation arrangements before they leave. The metropolitan Los Angeles area is huge and points of interest are far apart. Renting a car is a good idea but not absolutely necessary as Los Angeles has a good bus system that covers virtually every inch of the city. You can call 626-4455 when you're out there for schedules and other information. There is just so much to do in Los Angeles, it would be impossible to list everything in one article. I haven't even mentioned Marineland, the Hollywood Bowl, the rowdiness of the Comedy Store, Knott's Berry Farm, the Movieland Wax Museum or the spectacular serenity of a Mulholland Boulevard drive. But I do have one final suggestion for you: go out and do some exploring on your own. There are hundreds of well known sights just waiting for you to "discover" them.
