ACKNOWLEDGING OUR DEBT TO THE PAST
Hark we back to those first far-sighted, penniless collegians who realized the folly
of retaining their textbooks after examinations.
These were the standard-bearers, the pathfinders, of a new era in progressive stu-
dent self-service; these were the men who launched Student Book Exchange on its long
and checkered career in the between-semester used book market.
Even now they come, out of the church attics, the cellar apartmnents, the arbore-
tum: the rich, the poor, the proud, the humble, the apathetic, the gung-ho, the wretched
refuse of the teeming quads - all humanity, arms laden with the companions of a
semester's intellectual existence.
Like old carriage-horses that know the way, they plod through the corridors of
SAB, steeped in the rich tradition of an era of meaningful student government (long since
clarified away) to the chambers of the Exchange, where unsuccessful campus politicians
generously apportion advance payments among the sellers of books.
Visit the Exchange during the examination period, when seasonal rituals impart
a scholarly mien to this otherwise sterile cranny. Notice particularly the stark, functional
appointments, by reason of which the Exchange is known as "the Robert Hall of the
book business."
And bring your books with you, won't you? It's an experience riot soon to be
forgotten.
