ri' Swimmers, Wrestlers Capture Close Deci ong Finish Powers Wolverines Michigan Wrestlers Upset I Big Ten Relays Victory over IU In Last-Minute Mat Thrille By HAL APPLEBAUM Special to The Daily EAST LANSING - Michigan's swim team retained their unof- ficial Big Ten Relay championship here today, but the verdict was in doubt until the next to the last event as Indiana battled the Wolverines down to the wire. The Hoosiers, p r e -season choices to challenge the Wolver- ines for national swimming hon- ors, stunned Michigan by winning three of the first four relays be- fore., faltering under; a t'errific stretch drive by the Wolverines. Trailing 3-1 and faced with their first defeat in three years, Coach Gus Stager's Wolverines unleashed a furious stretch drive, winning the last five events to make the final tally 6-3. 1(SU, Iowa State Shut Out The other participating schools, host Michigan State and Iowa State, an invited squad from the Big Eight Conference, were shut out. The final and anticlimactic 400-yard medley relay was won by the Wolverines with MSU in sec- ond and a tired Indiana team third.. Stager admitted, "I am pleased and proud that we fought back the way we did, but we found out that we are going to have our work cut for us.' "I really don't know if we will be able to beat Indiana in dual meet, Big Ten or national com- petition," he added. Astonishing Performance Indiana's overall performance was even more astonishing in light of the fact that Mike Troy, the world record holder in 200 meter butterfly, and breaststroke stir Gerald Miki did not make the trip. The Michigan swimmers admit- tedly somewhat "flat", neverthe- less gave several promising per- formances. Most notable performances were given by the Wolverines in the 400-yard breaststroke, butterfly relay, the diving relay, and the all-important 300-yard individual medley relay and 200-yard free- style relay. Comes from Behind At the end of the first 100 yards of the 300-yard individual relay Indiana's Dick Beaver held a 6- foot margin over Michigan's Har- ry Huffaker. The Wolverines' sec- ond man, Fred Wolf, was only able to gain a foot on Tom Verth, but Tashnick, swimming anchor, covered the last leg in the phen- omenal time of :57 to catch Hoosier Bill Barton and win by inches. With . Michigan leading for the first time the Wolverines went for the clincher in the 200-yard free- style relay. Inidana, winner of both the 500- and 400-yard free- style relays, was favored. In the first 50 yards Michigan's John McGuire and Indiana's John Parks finished even, but Fred Rounds and Pete Sintz swimming the second and third legs respec- tively for the Hoosiers, were able to give Indiana a five-foot lead at the end of 150 yards. However, Michigan sprint ace, Frank Le- gacki, who failed to overcome his Hoosier opponents in the earlier freestyle .events, powered his way to a 2-foot victory, defeating Bill Beaver. Superb Time Legacki's unofficial time in the meet-deciding 50 yards was a superb :22.3. In the 400-yard breaststroke, butterfly relay the Wolverine quintet of breaststrokers Ken Ware and Ron Clark and but- terfly specialists Dave Gillanders and Tony Tashnick raced to a 15-yard victory, setting a relays and pool record in the process. Without Competition The diving relay, in which the scores of two divers are added to-: gether to reach a team total, was won by Michigan's Joe Gerlach' and T. Francis, who were literally without competition. Their near- est rivals were the Michigan 'B' team, of Ernie Meissner and Ron Jaco, diving for exhibition, who finished 44 behind. The Wolverines' other victories, in the 200-yard relay and the 400- yard medley relay were .routine. The 200-yardcombination of John Smith backstroke, Ron Clark, breaststroke, Tony Tash- nick, butterfly and John McGuire, freestyle, defeated Michigan State by two feet with the crucial leg being swum by Tashnick. The 400-yard quartet of Smith, Clark, Gillanders and Hanley, who set a Michigan record Friday night set a Relay's record in easi- ly defeating the Spartans, but their time was nine-tenths of a second of their time of Friday.
