UNIVERSITY TV: Station To Offer Christmas Shows For Direct Classified Ad Service, Phone NO 2-4786 from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. Monday through Friday, aid Saturday 9:30 'til 11:30 A.M. , Several holiday . TV programs will be broadcast by the Univer- sity television station during the Christmas season. "Christmas in a Wary World," a program concerning the chang- ing meaning of Christmas, will be broadcast at 9 a.m. Sunday, over WXYZ-TV as a part of the Uni- versity television series, "Under- standing Our World." "Christmas is both a holiday and a holy day; a day of merry- making, and a day for the wor- shipful recognition of the coming of a Savior," Prof. Arthur East- man of the English department, the show's narrator, said. This conflict between the holiday-holy day aspects will be expressed in works of art. Illustrate Christmas Thackery's "Mahogany Tree" and Irving Berlin's "White Christ- mas" will illustrate the holiday aspect of Christmas. The holy day aspect will be expressed through the works of Milton, Shakespeare and Tennyson. Showing how the waryness of today's Christmas has affected music, the University Percussion Orchestra will play a new ar- rangement of, "Jingle Bells." Vic- tor Miesel, of the art department, will show the-'painter's changing views on the Nativity in works by Giotto, Rubens and Roualt. Milton will be the subject of this week's "Genius" series to be seen at 8:30 a.m. Saturday o v e r WXYZ-TV. Prof. Warner Rice, chairman of the English department, will read several passages from Milton's "Paradise Lost" and discuss Mil- ton's purpose in writing the poem: to explain God's ways to man. Fall of Man In "Paradise Lost" Milton takes the fall of man - the story of Adam and Eve - and connects it with the fall of the wicked an- gels as found in the Book of Reve- lations. This poem relates the moral and spiritual history of mankind. According to Prof. Rice, Milton was not only a great poet but also a strong fighter for liberty and freedom of the press in seven- teenth century England. The res- toration of Charles II forced Mil- ton from the political arena. It was then that he began writing his greatest poetry. Much of his writing was done under a great handicap. Milton always had poor eyesight and in his latter years was totally blind.
