It is currently selling in bookstores around Ann Arbor and throughout the nation. The 18 chapter work has over 500 pictures and has been out since the middle of August. Loken was ably aided by Bob Willoughby, a former gymnast =at Michigan, and the two worked on the book for three years in their spare time. "It sure was a great feeling of relief when we finished it," said Loken, "because the pressure of finishing each chapter and even- tually the book kept building up." Prentice-Hall signed Loken to a contract to write their book be- cause they felt a definite need for a publication of this type and thought that a man of Loken's ex- perience could do such a job. The popular Michigan coach has been connected with gymnastics for a long time, having been Presi- dent of the National Association of Gymnastic Coaches after he left Minnesota, where as an under- graduate he was Big Ten and Na- tional All - Around Champion in 1942. 1 goal being scored or to injury to the goalie. The final part of the game is the penalties. They force the team of the penalized player to play short handed until his penalty has ex- pired or in the case of a minor penalty until a goal by the opposi- tion has been scored. Minor pen- alties are two minutes long and the majors are five minutes in duration. Minor penalties are called for minor violations: Things like trip- ping, holding, interference, hook- ing (using the blade of one's stick as a hook on an opponent), board checking (deliberately taking a start and crashing an opponent into the boards), high sticking (carrying the stick over the normal shoulderhheight when in close con- tact with an opponent), and cross checking (misuse of the stick in which a check is delivered with both hands on the stick off the ice). Major penalties are called for fighting, while match penalties (five minutes) are called for a deliberate intent ,to injure. Mis- conducts, which' are 10 minute penalties for which a team is per- mitted to use a substitute, are usually called for abuse of the of- ficials. However hockey is so fast that even, the best of officials cannot catch all of the violations and consequently games often get rough and the body contact be- comes even rougher as tempers get hot. There is no play stoppage ex- cept for an infraction of the rules and coaches often substitute "on the fly." This speed, contact and never ending action is slowly drawing the attention of the public and the people are gradually beginning to accept hockey as one of the great- est sports in the world.
