THE MICHIGAN DAILY LEGACY: 'U' Offers TV Presentation On Cultural Development For Direct Classified Ad Service, Phone NO 2-474 from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. Monday through Friday, and Saturday 9:30 'ti 11]30 A.M. "Conflict and Creation," the fourth program of the University television series "Legacy" will be presented at noon today on WWJ- TV, Channel 4, Detroit. "Conflict and Creation" is a portrait in picture, drama and music of the age of daVinci, Michelangelo, Columbus, Cellini and Machiavelli. According to Prof. Stephen Ton- sor of the history department, who will take part in the program, the Renaissance like the 20th century was an exploding age. "And like the 20th century with its fear of the hydrogen bomb and world extinction, the Renaissance believed in the impending biblical apocalypse--the end of the world." But where the Renaissance man had it over us," Prof. Tonsor com- mented, "was that he believed in the soul, in the hereafter. This enabled him to work in the present and create immortal beauty for the future." The Renaissance man's capacity for having "this world, as well as the next" was due, according to Tonsor, to his love of the past. "He knew he was living in a great dynamic age, but he recog- nized a greater age than his own-- the world of classical Greece." "And he could, like Michelange- lo, da Vinci, even Columbus, take this past age and fuse it with his own Christian one, and make a harmony that would thrill and de- light people for centuries to come," he continued. Tonsor : felt that Americans peering, at rockets going toward the moon would do well to peer backwards at an age which under- stood how to harmonize past and present, fear and boldness. Plan Meeting tOf Honorary The University chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, honorary education fraternity, will hear reports by four international students who recently visited Michigan high schools, at a discussion meeting at 8 p.m. tomorrow in the. Rack- ham Bldg.,' EastConference Room. The program will be conducted by Russ Hanson, counselor at the International Center. Refresh- " ments will be served. , V4V4~Wt. ~ ~.t.wnfl.~MrtV'V t~t'~&~~* Make lounging fun in these warm P.J's. .. red. bottoms with white tops, embroidered iin red so gay for gifting too!
