Big Ten Title Chase Specializes in Upsets; Favorites Bow in Half of Games Played By MIKE GILLMAN If you think you're an expert at picking the winners in a football pool, try sticking to the Big Ten for a case of ulcers. Many a potential swami's pre- dictions have fallen by the way- side this season as upsets have al- most been the rule rather than the exception in the Western Con- ference. The only note of regu- larity in an otherwise chaotic schedule has been the perform- ance of the Wildcats of North- western. Ara Parseghian's boys have been favored in all four of their conference games and have man- aged to pull all of them out, after flirting with upset-minded teams such as Michigan, Iowa and Min- nesota-almost getting their claws clipped. Their only decisive Big Ten victory to date was last Sat- urday's Homecoming win over Indiana, 30-13. Upset Sooners And the Wildcats were actually involved in an early-season upset when they tagged Oklahoma's Sooners with a defeat in a non- conference affair. Outside of the four Big Ten games that Northwestern has played in, 16 Conference tilts have gone by the boards. In these 16 games, the 16 favored teams have manabed to pull out only six wins. In fact one week saw Northwest- ern as the only favored team to win in four league games. A week by week account of the Big Ten's throwing away of the form book is as follows: The first week of the season got the ball rolling in fine fashion as favored Illinois bit the dust before a sophomore -studded Indiana E A WILDrM Emigrated from the SHETLAD ISLES team by a score of 20-0 in the only league game. The second week's slate had three conference games, with Michigan State rolling as expected over Michigan, 34-8; Northwest- ern winning the first of its cliff- hangers over Iowa, ,14-10, on a last period interception; and a lone upset of Indiana by the lowly Gophers of Minnesota who won, 24-10, in their best offensive splurge of the year. 'The third week saw the dope book completely tossed out the window, as only Northwestern's 6-0 win over Minnesota was fore- seen by the prognosticators. The other three league games saw Iowa dumping favored Michi- gan State, 37-8, behind the pass- ing of Olin Treadway; Purdue smashing slightly favored Wiscon- sin 21-0, and lightly-regarded Illi- nois upsetting Ohio State's Bucks, 9-0. Stop Rally The following week, Northwest- ern stopped a late Michigan rally to win 20-7 and Illinois edged Minnesota, 14-6, in the two games to follow the predictions. At the same time, Iowa, favored because of its showing. against MSU, whipped Wisconsin, 25-16, and OSU stuck to the ground in up- setting then-seventh-ranked Pur- due, 15-0. Two weeks ago, things calmed down and Wisconsin stopped OSU, 12-3,. Purdue edged Iowa, 14-7, and MSU took a 14-6 win over In- diana (in a game that is still be- ing disputed because of the game movies showing an extra Hoosier T:6), for a threefavorite - three wins record. But Michigan spoiled the day for oddsmakers by pulling the day's only upset over Minnesota, with Darrell Harper going 83 yards and Fred Julian going 43 yards for the two tallies in a 14-6 win. In the most recent action, Wis- consin over Michigan, 19-10, and Northwestern over Indiana, 30-13, went according to the book, but. . . upsets were registered by OSU over Michigan State, 30-24, and Illinois' 7-7 tie with Purdue kept . . the highly rated Boilermakers :;> g from-taking home the marbles.
