20, 1959 THR MICHIGAN DAILY as .20, 19_.H MCHG DAL ' :: Wolverines Switch Strategy In Preparation for Gophers *CLREFIIE5S By HAL APPLEBAUM After a week of futile prepara- tion for the light and mobile Wildcats of Northwestern, Michi- gan had to reverse its tactics yes- terday as the Wolverines under- went their first drills preparatory for battle with the large and slow Gophers of Minnesota at Minne- apolis Saturday. Northwestern, as Michigan fans can attest, is noted for its light- ning-like attack and breakaway potential, while the lead-footed Gophers depend on a 220-lb. de- fensive line to contain their oppo- nents. In their last three games the Minnesota forward wall, which Coach Murray Warmath calls his greatest, has limited Indiana, Northwestern and Illinois to five touchdowns. However, six of the Minnesota starting linemen showed up for practice yesterday with injuries, although most, if not all, are ex- pected to see action. Offensively, though, the Goph- ers have not been able to keep pace as they have scored only four times in the three games, with three of these tallies coming against Indiana in their lone vic- tory. Minnesota uses an offensive at- tack somewhat similar to that of Northwestern with the quarter- back option being their bread and butter play the Gophers run al- most exclusively from the split and winged T formations. Michigan spent the entire hour long practice session yesterday defensing the plays of the Goph- ers, as ru nby the fifth string Dr. W. A. Coxon, team physi- cian, said that the squad should be in nearly top physical shape for its Little Brown Jug encounter with the Gophers. Jon Schopf, starting tackle, who missed the Northwestern game was reported to be progressing well and should be ready for ac- tion this week. "It takes two weeks for a sprained ankle to heal and Schopf DID YOU KNOW? should have had enough tine to be ready to go," Coxon stated. "Wilbert Franklin's knee should also have healed sufficiently to al- low him to play." Bob Johnson's sore hand has improved rapidly and he, too, shouldbe in peak condition for, the game. Taylr W1n By BOB SCHMITZ Allen Rumsey's sensational sec- ond half double pass play netted the West Quad team a6-0 victory over Hayden, and overall superi- ority gave Taylor a 36-6 triumph over Chicago in I-M football ac- tion yesterday as both squads re- mained undefeated. After a scoreless first half, Rum- sey quarterback Terry Davidson initiated a pass pattern that went to right end, John Lohrfrink, and then to Clark Kretzschmer for a 51-yard touchdown play. With quarterback Jim Ludwig paving the way, Taylor coasted to its fourth win without a setback by whipping Chicago. Ends, Dan Molhoek and Ken Reichle each tallied two of the five touchdowns. Once beaten Gomberg pulled the; surprise of the day by solidly trouncing previously u n b e a t e n Hinsdale, 36-17. In "B" league action Kelsey re- mained unbeaten and was guar- anteed a playoff berth as they breezed past Hayden 26-0. stout Kelsey' defense. Allen Rumsey's 'B' team also stayed unbeaten with a 6-0 win over Michigan. Following is a recap of the re- mainder of yesterday's residence halls action: Huber smashed Adams by a 20-10 margin in an 'A' tilt. Other 'A' games saw Kel- sey slaughter Anderson, 38-0; Van Tyne blank. Williams, 22-0; Win- chell edge Michigan, 8-0; Lloyd trip Cooley, 6-0; and Wenley win by forfeit over Reeves. In, 'B' contests,Adams defeated Taylor, 18-6; Hinsdale was shut out 6-0 by Wenley; Van Tyne trounced Cooley, 14-0; Lloyd was victorious over Gomberg, 6-0; Greene held Winchell in check for an 8-0 triumph; Williams regis- tered an 8-0 win over Chicago; and Reeves "B" team also forfeit- ed to Strauss. Purdin broke the Wolverines back when he romped 85 yards for a last-period touchdown with the 'Cats ahead only 14-7. Johnson suffered a bruised hand injury in the game but will be ready for action Saturday. LGRID 'SELECTIONSI Ron England "hunched" his way through last week's Grid Picks contest to easily win the two free passes to the Michigan Theatre, now showing "The Diary of Anne Frank." England, '60BAd, said that he just had a few hunches about the games, on which he posted a 15-5 record. There were numerous upsets, especially in the topsy turvy Big Ten, which threw many contestants far off the pace. Today, as before, marks the beginning of a new contest with ev- eryone having a fresh start at the theatre tickets.
