Lloyd Trump, director of the Commission on the Secondary School, University of Illinois, at Urbana, will address an invitation- al architectural conference here on "New. Schools for New Education" next Monday through Wednesday. He will speak on the architectural objectives as seen by his commis- sion at the. opening session in the Rackham Amphitheater at 10 a.m. Monday. His talk will be supple- mented by a short film. The session will be opened by the Vice-President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School Ralph A. Sawyer, who will speak on the significance of the relation between architecture, education, and the University research pro- gram. The session is open to all those interested., The workshop conference will be attended by approximately thirty- five architects, educators, school administrators, and people from, other fields or academic disciplines interested in the secondary school. The conference is sponsored by the architecture department,' whose chairman is Prof. Walter B. Sanders, and it will be supported by a $25,000 grant from the Ford Foundation's Educational Facilities Laboratories, Inc. The Education school will also participate. The conference's purpose is to explore the architectural implica- tion of the suggestions advanced in Trump's "Images of the Future: a New Approach to the Secondary School." Urges Shift This report urges a shift away from the conventional classroom of a fixed size, with a teacher and some thirty odd students, into a new arrangement whereby each student will spend a part of the day in groups of 150 or more, for lecture and general instruction. Another part of the time could be spent in groups of fifteen to eighteen, for seminar discussions, and the rest of the time in indi- vidual private study. Ten To Participate Ten nationally known school architects, will participate in the conference. These architects are preparing drawings, models, and other architectural exhibits that will illustrate their ideas for im- plementing the recommendations of the Trump Commission report. University Designates New Studies" The University will receive over $50 thousand in government funds for Russian and Arabic Language and Area study centers. The money, which 'will . be matched by the University, has been given as two of the 19 such contracts awarded annually under the National Defense Education Act. The purpose of the centers is to increase the University's cur- riculum in the two languages. As a result of the contracts six new courses have been added to the Slavic Department curriculum and an intensive Arabic course has been added to the Depart- ment of Near Eastern Studies. Two new Russian history courses have been added under the aus- pices of the interdepartmental Committee on the Program on Russian studies and a number of new instructors have been added in Russian language courses. There is also a provision in the contract for special visiting lec-' turers, additional library and source materials and clerical help. During the summer, the pro- gram will be expanded to include intensive Russian language courses and a detailed course"on the So- viet Union. Related to the newly designated centers, the National Defense Edu- cation Act has awarded 16 fellow- ships for future teachers in the Slavic and Near Eastern Studies Departments.
