All Saturday's Injuries Mended for Wildcats '._.,_. .... . r -- - 01 By MIKE GILLMAN Michigan's Wolverines recuper- ated from Saturday's bruising vic- tory over Oregon State by con- tenting themselves with a short practice session yesterday. The reserves who didn't play against the Beavers stayed and scrimmaged the frosh, while the others went in to watch the game 1 films. The usual Monday injury ques- tion was answered by trainer Jim Hunt in the following rubdown- rundown: Captain George Genyk, who suffered a gashed head in pre- game warmups Saturday and saw no action, will be ready for Sat- urday's contest with Northwest- ern. Reserve guard Jon Schopf, who suffered an ankle sprain, will also be fit. Bennie McRae, whose actioni was limited in Saturday's win, should be at top conditiorf for the invading Wildcats. Head Coach Bump Elliott explained the sopho- more halfback's absence after the Beaver contest by saying that he felt that McRae was not yet "ef- fective enough" to play steadily, Ux following his injury in the Michi- gan State game. John Haley, who has not yet dressed for a game worked out yes- terday afternoon. Trainer Hunt said that Haley will continue to work out as long as he is able to. The exact nature of Haley's in- jury has never: been determined. Said Hunt, "We think it's a nerve pressure of some ki'nd, but then again, all sensation, pain or plea- sure is from the nerves, so we really don't know anything for sure."- "As far as we know, all of our other injuries right now are strict- ly of a minor nature," Hunt -add- ed. This, at least, should be some consolation for Wolverine rooters who will see their favorites take on the nation's number two team, Northwestern, this weekend. Coach Elliott isn't ready to con- cede defeat, however, as on the wall of the training room hangs a blackboard reading:" "A Blanket ,of Blue for Northwestern too." William NO 8-6335 NO 8-7017 Steve Vondercrone won last week's Grid Picks contest in the closest competition this year as, for the first time, the score of the Michigan game had to be used to decide the winner. Three persons, including Vondercrone, picked 17 of the 20 games correctly, but the champion was only seven points off the Michigan- Oregon State score of 18-7. Clara Costello was runner-up as she was only nine off, while still another lady forecaster, ,Nancy Artinian, was a distant third, her score being 35 points away from the actual one. Vondercrone. of 216 Winchell, will receive two free passes to the Michigan theatre currently showing "The FBI Story," starring James Stewart and Vera Miles. Last week's games seemed to be the easiest thus far as a record number of contestants did better than in the previous two weeks. With last week taken care of, today marks the beginning of the fourth week of Grid Picks and everyone is starting over with an equal opportunity to win the two theatre passes. As before; just send in this article or a facsimile to Grid Picks, The Michigan Daily, 420 Maynard, Ann Arbor, or come to The Daily and fill out an entry blank. There is just one entry per person and be sure to include your name, address and telephone number with it. The contest closes at midnight Friday, October 16. THIS WEEK'S GAMES Fritz Crisler Mentioned For NFL Post DETROIT ()-Three Michigan sports figures drew mention yes- terday as the National Football League began looking toward re- placement of Commissioner Bert Bell, who died Sunday at the Pittsburgh-Philadelphia game. Athletic Director Fritz Crisler of the University of Michigan, Pres- ident-General Manager Edwin J. Anderson of the Detroit Lions, and General Manager W. Nick Ker- bawy of the Detroit Pistons were mentioned as possible successors. But there was no indication that any of them had an, inside track to the job. Crisler would have to be regard- ed as a real long shot for the post since he frequently has been an outspoken' critic of pro football. Though.he has been part owner of the Lions for more than a dec- ade, Anderson moved into an ac- tive role as president and general manager only in June, 1958. Kerbawy was a member of the Lions' staff for 10 years before stepping out as general manager in June, 1958, to accept the job of running the Pistons' basketball team.
